I have a real treat for you today! One of our clients who recently returned from South Africa, Rebecca Reynolds of Rebecca Reynolds Consulting, has allowed us to share with you her inspirational story that made her say yes to a trip to Africa.

It is never too late for a fresh start, for personal growth, and for self discovery. Whether it’s the new year that has you craving some change or you have felt deep down in your heart that it’s time for a journey, 2012 provides us with a new chapter in our lives. One that is yet to be written. So I encourage you to read today’s feature article from Rebecca and find your inspiration to say yes to South Africa in 2012.

Feature article written by Hills of Africa Travel client, Rebecca Reynolds of Rebecca Reynolds Consulting:

This time last year, I began my ruminations about turning 50 and what I’d do to mark it.

If I’d been thinking of celebration, I might’ve wished for a surprise party, or a fancy dinner somewhere, or a compendium of memories collected and bound in stamped leather. But my thoughts bent more toward commemoration . . . this birthday would be between me and Me.

For me, 50 marked a moment, not for trumpets and streamers, but for deep quietude, looking into the face of who I am and who I have yet to become. I have little idea how 50 feels—what it looks like or means. I only know that this time calls to me from far away and from deep inside. And the call is as primal as fire, as mysterious as the hermit, as inexorable as time.

When the question first entered my mind—how do I want to mark this milestone?—the answer came quietly: A trip. From this thought seed, from this slip of an idea, the whole thing was begun.

What kind of trip? A big trip. A journey.

What does that mean? To a place I’ve never been before.

Why? To challenge myself. To open myself to a completely new experience.

Where?

A place to breathe fresh and deep the aroma of unknown earth, cradling roots of strange plants, ground into dusty spice and stirred into pots of surprising flavors to my virgin tongue.

A place to open my eyes for the first time to color hues seen only in dreams, to dance to rhythms unfamiliar to my feet but recognized deep down in the ear of my heart.

A place to discover and remember, out of which to begin the next phase of this life.

Of the places I imagined in that first musing, Africa didn’t cross my mind. In truth, I thought more about where I wouldn’t go than where I would. I thought of the places I’ve been before and off the list they went. I thought of places similar to them and they scuttled along too. That left a blank page—a vast whiteness out of which I hoped the place would soon enough draw itself.

I went about my business.

Then one day, a month or so later, on a phone call, the outline first appeared. I was invited to go to South Africa. The tip of a continent, the corner early European explorers persevered in rounding, a place of ancient beauty and painful history.

As I considered South Africa, I struggled to recognize it as my choice. You see, I hadn’t thought much about it. I’d read a novel here and there. In college, I learned of apartheid and the knowledge lodged deep in my gut. Movies and nature shows on life in the savanna stirred the vague hope of safari one day. And most of all, Mandela’s 30-year incarceration ending in his presidency taught me that nothing in this world is permanent, and clinging to “the way things are”—in either complacency or dread—is simply folly. But other than these few markers, South Africa wasn’t much more to me than an outline on a map.

After the call and for the next few months, I went through the motions of considering the decision, which meant coming up with a lot of questions. Why would I go? What would I do? With whom would I go? When would I leave? I talked with people; I gathered data; I read books and looked at maps. But it really boiled down to if I would go or if I wouldn’t. And at one point, I just said yes.

If I’m really frank though, saying yes was simply the moment when “me” caught up to what “Me” had known all along. Of course I was going to South Africa. When, to do what, with whom, and for how long were just details.

Back at home now, I reflect on what a superb lesson this is. It’s the one about saying YES. Choosing yes, without all the conditions, parameters, and details nailed to the wall. The kind of yes that is an act of faith in the goodness, the bounty, the sheer joyousness of life. The yes that sets magic in motion.

When I got to South Africa, a man explained to me that the word “safari” is Swahili for “journey.” It’s used in particular reference to the annual migration of millions of animals from one side of the Serengeti to the other. They make this arduous journey across the vast savanna in search of food, of sustenance, of life. It’s clear to me that my travels from the American continent to the African one was in the same way a safari, a journey from one side of the world to the other, in search of sustenance.

The taste of the new, from its pot mingling with things essential and some familiar, still lingers on my lips.

On an African safari tour, many travelers find themselves drawn to primates. That’s partly because humans are considered primates and animals in this order often remind us (in funny, poignant, and surprising ways) of ourselves.

So what should you look for during your next trip to Africa? Keep your eyes peeled for these six primates, which compose most of the major primate groups (there are 51 species total!).

Gorilla: Found in tropical and subtropical African forests, gorillas are the largest non-extinct primate species. Gorillas are social animals, and tend to live in troops, which generally consist of one adult male (also called a “silverback”) and multiple females and young gorillas. Some troops include more than one male. Most closely related to chimpanzees and humans, gorillas are vegetarians and communicate through grunts, barks, and deeply resonant burps.

Chimpanzee: The two types of chimpanzees, the common chimpanzee and the bonobo, are the closest living relatives to humans. Like humans, chimps live in large social groups (“communities”) composed of several males and females. Within these groups, a hierarchy of power develops, with one alpha male atop the order and many lesser power ranks below him. The alpha male is not always the biggest or strongest, but instead forges strategic alliances with others who help him maintain his power. Sound familiar?

Black-and-White Colobus: This type of monkey lives in dense African forests, where it has adapted to occupy places that other primates cannot. Colobuses play an important role in spreading seeds throughout their habitats (through their digestive tracts and the act of eating), but are currently threatened by bushmeat hunting. While bushmeat hunting (that is, the hunting of wild game, or animals that live in the “bush”) threatens a number of wild species, many Africans living at the subsistence level rely on such food to live.

Vervet Monkey: Native to southeastern African countries (including Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and South Africa), the vervet monkey is small and plain in color (mostly black, white, and gray). One of the vervet’s most fascinating attributes is its warning calls—vervets warn of predators with predator-specific vocalizations. In some situations, mother vervets have been observed chastising their young for giving the wrong warning call!

Baboons: Social animals, baboons live in troops that can range from five to 250 members. A variety of mating and friendship behaviors might take place, but among one of the most interesting is that some male baboons will grab babies during fights to protect themselves.

Galago: Also known as a “bush baby,” this small primate species is nocturnal and known for its unusually strong jumping abilities. While galagos tend to live in groups, these groups usually consist of only males or females. A single male often mates with all the females in an area, and males who have not established territory for themselves might live in “bachelor” groups.

When you’re planning your African safari vacation, be sure to schedule time to observe these amazing, highly developed animals in their natural habitats!

What’s your favorite African primate?

Wholeheartedly supporting the motto “You can take the girl out of Africa, but you can’t take Africa out of the girl,” Lori Robinson has established herself as a huge advocate for conservation efforts throughout East Africa. Since her first visit to Africa in 1984, Lori fell in love with the people, environment, and nature of Africa and has made it her life’s mission to lend support and aid to East Africa through her grassroots projects.

We are honored to share with you our exclusive interview with Lori, where she discusses some of her projects and initiatives throughout East Africa and how individuals, just like you, can lend support:

1. Tell us a little bit about your amazing projects, including Africa’s Angels, Notes ‘N Totes, and your Plastic Bag Project. What inspired you to launch these projects and how do they benefit the people of Africa?

My conservationist heart led me to Africa, particularly Tanzania (because I lead tours there for the Jane Goodall Institute). In partnership with community leaders there and donors here (Africa’s Angels), we have built rain catchment systems for access to clean water, cleared the area of plastic litter (as seen in the video below), and done workshops on organic gardening and sustainable living concepts.

Next month 300 kids will participate in a Notes ‘N Totes exchange, which sets up pen pals between kids in America and Africa, focusing on environmental solutions. Kids learn from each other. The Africans in this program have no access to the Internet so the letters from America are an important means of connection. All of Africa Inside’s efforts support and encourage solutions developed in partnership with the local community.

2. How has Africa influenced your life? In other words, what has it taught you about yourself?

I am working on a book of stories from 30 years of traveling to and living in Africa. In the process, I’m exploring this question. Africa (its people, animals, and environment) has influenced me in so many ways, especially in my lifestyle choices. I now live simply, in a small dwelling (I sold my big house and most of the stuff in that house), make a concentrated effort to not consume more than I need, prioritize what makes me happy, and have slowed down so I notice others and nature more, and stay connected to nature, animals, and friends and family. I’m living more of a rural African lifestyle than American and in this way can say, I “walk my talk.”

3. You are good friends with Jane Goodall and each year you host a Jane Goodall trip. Tell us about these trips and how individuals can get involved.

Members of the Jane Goodall Institute who donate a minimum of $1,000 are invited to participate in the trips I lead for her. As a young girl (like many other girls my age) I wanted to be Jane Goodall. It has been a privilege working for her. I also design safaris for other non-profits, and lead trips for people who want to help.

4. How can individuals donate or lend support to your projects?

The easiest way to make a donation is through CrowdRise. On a more involved level, people can join my annual trips that combine a quintessential safari experience with a meaningful community project.

5. Is there anything else you wish to add?

On my site, AfricaInside.org there are stories, safari itineraries, and descriptions of projects. I hope to connect to your followers there. I believe everyone needs to go to Africa at least once in their lifetime. It is truly life changing. But they also need to be prepared for it to get inside of them, too. I am thrilled to be connected to Hills of Africa because we are like minded and share the same passion for Africa. Thanks so much.

If you’ve ever traveled outside of your home country, you know that tipping guidelines vary everywhere. Many times, we don’t even think about tipping until we actually arrive to our destination—which can cause some unnecessary stress.

When traveling to Africa, it’s important to keep in mind that tipping is not necessary. However, if you have received exceptional service and would like to show your gratitude and appreciation through the form of a tip, here are some guidelines to keep in mind, no matter where you are in the African continent:

Individual camp, game lodge, hotel staff members, and accommodation safari guides: If you have been given excellent service by an accommodation staff member or guide, we suggest offering he / she a tip of $10 (U.S. dollars) per person per day. Therefore, if you are on an African family safari with 5 people in your party and stay at a lodge for 3 nights, you would tip the individual $150.

The safari camp / lodge staff as a whole: If there is no particular person that you wish to tip, but would like to tip the lodge or camp staff as a whole, we recommend a tip of $5 (U.S. dollars) per guest, per day. Be sure to specify that the tip should be distributed among all staff members.

The hotel staff as a whole: If you are staying at a hotel and would like to tip the housekeeping and hotel staff for your stay, we suggest $1 – $2 per day, per person.

Tour guides and transfer drivers: We recommend giving a transfer driver $2 (U.S. dollars) per person in your party. For half day tours, we suggest giving your guide $5 (U.S. dollars) per person. And full day tour guides can get $10 (U.S. dollars) per person in your party.

Restaurants: If you have received exceptional service at a restaurant, we recommend leaving a 10% tip, based on your bill / check.

For southern and eastern Africa, only, here are some tipping guidelines:

Tracking guides and mokoro (traditional canoe) paddlers: If you are embarking on a mokoro safari, we suggest giving the paddler $10 (U.S. dollars) per guest, per day, and the tracker $5 (U.S. dollars) per guest, per day.

Blue Train and Rovos Rail: It is recommended that your cabin attendant receive $20 (U.S. dollars) per person, per journey, and the waiter in the dining car $10 (U.S. dollars) per person, per journey.

For Central Africa, only, here are some tipping guidelines:

**Many of the activities you’ll be taking part in during a trip to Central Africa are different from those you would experience in southern and eastern Africa. Therefore, tipping does differ for certain activities.**

Gorilla trek porter: Your porter is the individual who will assist you in your hike and carry your bags. When tipping these individuals, we suggest $12 (U.S. dollars) per trek, per person.

Guides, trackers (typically 2 – 3 per group), and security personnel (typically 2 – 4 per group): For this entire trekking unit, we suggest $20 (U.S. dollars) per trek, per person. You may give the tip to the head guide and request that he distribute it to the other staff members who assisted in the trek.

Other guiding services: For other park guides and rangers, we recommend giving these individuals $5 (U.S. dollars) per person, per guided service.

It’s important to reiterate that tips are by no means required when in Africa. However, if you receive superior service, tips are more than welcome.

Traveling to the same destination(s) each year can get a bit stale and mundane. Why not make 2012 your year to explore your passions in a new and unfamiliar way by traveling to a place you’ve only dreamed of visiting?

Below are 5 fresh trip ideas for the discerning traveler who is looking to branch out and make 2012 the best travel year ever:

1. Lend a hand through a family service trip: From uneducated children to endangered wildlife, and poverty-stricken communities and countries to unsatisfactory health facilities and conditions, the world needs the help of philanthropists and volunteers who are passionate about making an impact on those in need. With a great deal of our planet affected by these unfortunate circumstances, there are hundreds of thousands of opportunities for individuals to give back to the people and wildlife in need.

Although there are thousands of areas around the world where your family can lend much-needed assistance, Africa enables families to learn about unique cultures and help produce a measurable impact on common issues that affect much of Africa (both in the environment and in local communities). In fact, many of these issues are seen primarily in Africa and are not as commonly seen in other parts of the world.

Must-include features for a family service itinerary:

South Africa: Half-day community service tours and full-day community service tours through the volunteer provider, African Impact. These tours will take place in two local communities near Cape Town: Red Hill Community and Masiphumelele Community.

***African Impact also offers community service tours in Zimbabwe, Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zambia.

2. Discover the fascinating flavors of Africa’s food and wine scenes: When travelers think of food and wine destinations they often think of France and Italy. What many travelers don’t realize is that South Africa is home to some of the world’s most spectacular wines and an authentic tasting and touring experience that is often more personalized and unique than a touristy wine destination.

In addition to being home to an exceptional wine region, South Africa is also famous for its award-winning chefs, diverse restaurants, and traditional Cape Malay cuisine. From charming bistros and wine bars to trendy cocktail clubs, and elegant seafood eateries to rustic steakhouses, South Africa’s culinary scene is one of the most broad and colorful in the world.

Must-include features for a food and wine itinerary:

South Africa: Cape Malay cooking classes / tours, Mother City Tour, Cape Winelands private wine tasting tour, wine making classes, horseback riding tours

Cape Malay cooking class

3. Photograph one of the world’s most enchanting animal kingdoms: Looking at starting up photography or exercising your current master photography skills? Let Africa be your blank canvas. With colorful wildlife, enchanting patterns, earthy textures, and uninhabited landscapes, Africa is a place where novice photographers and professional photographs, alike, can come to practice their skills and capture some of the most spectacular sights on planet earth.

Must-include features for a photographer’s itinerary:

Zambia: walking safaris through South Luangwa National Park

Botswana: game drives and mokoro safaris in the Chobe and Linyanti Game Reserves

4. Follow the Great Migration: Known as one of the world’s few natural phenomena, the Great Migration is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that should be had by all nature enthusiasts. Each year, the great migration takes place with millions of wildebeest and thousands of zebra following the moving rains in a continual circle across Kenya and Tanzania.

The best way to view the Great Migration is on a mobile or non-mobile tented camp safari. Both types of camps enable you to sleep close to where the Great Migration is currently situated.

Must-include features for a Great Migration itinerary:

Kenya: Great Migration safari in late July

Tanzania: Great Migration safari in March

5. Challenge your inner adventurist: Whether you’ve always dreamed of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, horseback riding through the untouched savannah plains, white water rafting down the Zambezi River, ziplining along one of the seven natural wonders of the world, or diving with the great white sharks of South Africa, Africa has it all. In fact, many consider it one of the most unique playgrounds for adventurists. And even if you wouldn’t consider yourself the adventurous type, it is never too late to break free from your fears and explore the world through fresh eyes. Make 2012 your year to challenge yourself and discover the beauty of the unexplored.

Must-include features for an adventurist’s itinerary:

South Africa: great white shark cage diving

Zimbabwe: Victoria Falls activities, which include bungee jumping, flying fox, gorge swinging, abseiling, and ziplining

Horse lovers are drawn to Africa for it’s varying terrain and fascinating biodiversity. There is truly nothing like roaming the bushveld on horseback.

Today, Kirsten Keun, freelance safari guide who also accompanies guests on horseback safaris and blogger for Kirfara, chats about what travelers can expect on a horseback safari and what makes horseback safaris so unique compared to other types of safaris.

See below for our interview with Kirsten (NOTE: All images contained in this post are owned by Kirsten Keun):

1. Tell us a little bit about your background with horseback safaris and why you are so passionate about them.

“Man is nothing without the beast. If all the beasts were gone, man would die from a great loneliness of spirit. For what ever happens to the beast, soon happens to man. All things are connected.” -Chief Seattle

African horse safaris epitomize adventure, romance, and horsemanship. Horses are at home in many parts of the world, and here in Africa they played an integral part through the course of history. They enable us to travel vast distances across mountains and valleys, introducing us to wildlife in a very special way.

After professional equine experience in Italy, Hawaii and Costa Rica, Africa is my home and I love being with horses. The wildlife, bushveld, and night skies are unbeatable, particularly when shared with four-legged friends. I have had the honor and responsibility to work at Wait a Little Horse and Game Ranch, Saddlebag Safaris, and Limpopo Valley Horse Safaris as a horse safari guide. Guiding in alternate environments, involving a variety of cultural and adventure landscapes, I work in English, Spanish, Italian, Afrikaans, and Zulu.

Residing in tourism hub and surfers paradise city of Cape Town, I always look for opportunities to escape to the bushveld and embark on a horse safari.

2. Where, in your opinion, is the best place to embark on an African horseback safari? Why?

Wherever you find horses, wildlife, an open sky, and savannah. In the Kruger National Park area Wait a Little is highly recommended. I do have a bias for where I come from, so working and riding at Wait a Little was a dream and a fantasy come true. Phillip and Gerti came to Africa to ride horses on a safari setup, and today they boast one of the leading horse safari destinations on the continent.

Another preferred riding /work place is Limpopo Valley Horse Safaris or LVHS. The “land of giants” consists of a unique fusion of baobab trees, elephants, and amazing horses and people. Wilderness camping and learning about the Tswana culture from the wonderful local guides compliments the safari experience.

The Waterberg in South Africa hosts Saddlebag Safaris and Dinaka Game Reserve. Sandy trails and gentle slopes characterize these ancient mountains where riding is fast, sporty, and satisfying. Destinations that offer some of the best riding in Africa are the Okavango Delta of Botswana and the Masai Mara / Serengeti plains of East Africa. Riding through picturesque vineyards, beaches, and Fynbos is a hop outside Cape Town, the tourism hub of Southern Africa. The Cape boasts the unique fynbos biome and Cape Floral Kingdom. Fynbos hosts the highest endemism of flowers on earth.

3. Describe what one might experience while on a horseback safari in Africa.

Horses often relax in the vicinity of wildlife, interacting through their body language, scent, and sounds. We are the tourists here, the visitors, and we learn from the wildlife and horses’ instincts and behaviors.

When there is danger, the interaction, ability and skill of the horse and rider combined keep them out of harms way. Safari horses are fit, and prospective riders have to train at their home riding facility to optimize their riding holiday experience once they get to Africa. Typical safari days could mean seven hours in the saddle.

4. How do horseback safaris differ from other safari types including game drives and walking safaris?

A complete safari enhances the visitors experience by mixing walking, driving, and riding. Horse safaris may utilize game drive vehicles and may also include some walking time. Walking is a great leg stretcher after a long day in the saddle, and we often get closer to predators in vehicles than we do on horseback. Every type of safari poses a unique vantage from where to observe and explore wildlife.

Horse safaris entail long hours in the saddle, typically two rides per day. Meeting and approaching some wildlife on horseback keeps everyone involved and participating.

5. Is there anything else you’d like to mention about horseback safaris in Africa?

Horses are trained for months and years, and the work behind the scenes is vast and intense. Some horse safaris present opportunities to share in the daily care taking of the horses in a voluntary way. If you feel like brushing your horse after a long ride, it will improve your friendship even more.

Riding is a skill and requires learning and exercising body positions and balance, often demanding fitness and endurance. On safari we meet numerous riders who are aiming to improve their skill and fitness. Riding before embarking on safari is a great idea in order to fit well with your forward going and able horse on safari. Every safari has its own character, degree of service, and level of riding. This is one tourism market that may have more return guests than any other. People connect with horses in special ways, and return to meet them once again in majestic Africa.
Horse safaris inspire me to host more riders in our beloved Africa. We dream at night and ride at daybreak. The experience changes lives, and fulfills the dreams of connecting with the wonderful creatures we share the Dark Continent with.

Horses bring light to Africa. Join us for the ride of your life.

In fact, according to BudgetTravel.com, “Solo travelers account for 11 percent of all American vacationers.”

So if you are considering solo travel to Africa, here are some benefits that might help you make your final decision:

Experience personal growth: Traveling by yourself can be an extremely enriching experience. I know because I’ve done it several times in the past and absolutely loved each time! I believe that when you travel by yourself, your senses are enhanced dramatically. Why? Because you are absorbing the world around you without the distraction of a conversation with your fellow travelers. I’m always so much more observant when I’m traveling by myself than when I’m traveling with friends or family. There is no conversation to distract you from your surroundings—you can fully absorb the sights, sounds, and aromas in the moment.

Decide your own direction and itinerary: Group travel—whether with friends or family—can be somewhat of a challenge to coordinate since each person has their own individual preferences and desires. Therefore, there is almost always a compromise that must be met when traveling as a close-knit group.

When you travel solo, your itinerary consists of everything that you want to do. There is no compromise that has to be met based on someone else’s needs. You are the leader and you decide the where and when components of your trip plan.

Meet like-minded travelers from around the world: Some great ways to meet new people include joining group tours or sitting in a restaurant bar area. You’re bound to find some great conversation in these situations and who knows—perhaps you’ll make a lifelong friend!

If you’ve made the decision to travel solo to Africa, then here are some tips to keep in mind (NOTE: these tips can really apply to any solo traveler, no matter what destination you visit):

Hire a trusted guide: Whether you participate in a group tour or private tour, using the assistance of a guide can introduce you to the language and local customs of the area, making you feel more comfortable in your surroundings. You’ll also learn a lot more about the area by using a guide, as oppose to following a guidebook.

Plan your itinerary with a trusted travel planner: A travel planner who is extremely knowledgeable and up to date on your preferred destination will be able to tell you where you should go and where you should stay clear from. No matter what destination you visit, there are always areas that should not be visited by tourists—especially when you are alone. A great travel planner can also guide you on the best accommodations, destinations, and activities to take part in, base on your personal needs and preferences. Also, be sure that you choose a travel planner who has your best interest as their main priority and that you are taken care of each step of the way on your journey. You want a travel company or planner who has agents in your destination so that they can take care of you at all times while you are abroad. This includes escorting you to and from the airport(s) and lending support and assistance whenever you need or desire it.

Always trust your intuition: If at any time you do not feel safe or someone is making you feel uncomfortable, do not feel bad about standing your ground and trusting your intuition. Even if you feel rude doing so, you must protect yourself.

Be aware of your surroundings and always protect your belongings: This applies anywhere you travel solo. You always want to be sure that you are smart when it comes to protecting your personal belongings and yourself.

One of the biggest red flags to pickpockets and scammers is a traveler who is showing signs that he or she is clearly lost. This means looking around with a big open map in your hands. If you need to look at a map, that’s completely fine. Find some privacy to do so and know where you wish to head before you start walking. Hold your bags close to you and make sure that all of your bags are zipped up.

Don’t walk around at night: Walking around by yourself at night can be dangerous—no matter where you are in the world. Therefore, try to do all of your activities during the day and enjoy the evenings in your hotel or in a nearby restaurant.
