Does your heart pound with envy at the thought of a racecar speeding across a racetrack at 250 mph? Or a skydiver freefalling from thousands of feet above the ground? If so, you may find that shark diving in Gansbaai, Western Cape, South Africa is the perfect solution to satisfy your deep-rooted hunger for adrenaline.

The Great White Shark

With strict preservation laws on great white sharks, Gansbaai is arguably the world’s best place to observe these exceptional creatures in their natural feeding grounds. One of the most popular places to observe the great white shark in Gansbaai is in the channel between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock—justifiably referred to as shark alley.

Sharks near Dyer IslandFor the more adventurous, you can observe these spectacular creatures up-close from the safety of a specially designed shark diving cage. If you’re on the more conservative side—like myself—you can witness sharks feed from the comfort of the boat. In addition to viewing a variety of shark species, you can see Cape fur seals, whales, and penguins.

Great White Sharks near Dyer Island

In Gansbaai there are a variety of shark dive safari providers and excursions to choose from—some including cages, photography opportunities, manta rays, hammerheads, tiger sharks, and more. Although each shark dive safari provider offers varying itineraries, many supply delicious breakfasts and lunches during your full day of shark viewing and diving.  One of the companies we recommend is Marine Dynamic Tours, which is Fair Trade Certified by the Fair Trade in Tourism company in South Africa.

Below are some things you can see and do in the deep waters surrounding Gansbaai:

Shark Diving Tours in Gansbaai

• Observe a large variety of sharks as you float safely behind the iron bars of a shark cage. Depending on the type of shark dive safari you choose, you can see hammerheads, tiger sharks (the most dangerous shark in the world), great whites, and bull sharks in their natural habitats.
• View shark feedings from the comfort of a boat. Because great whites feed at the surface, it’s not necessary to cage dive if you want to see these magnificent animals. Although it is a completely different experience, you will still be able to see great whites as they come to the surface for food.
• Scuba dive with one of the ocean’s largest and most gentle creatures, the whale shark, or through a handful of wrecks and reefs.
• Photograph enormous manta rays, moray eels, dolphins, colorful reef fish, turtles, seals and wreck sharks.

Seals at Dyer Island

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come face-to-face with one of the world’s most dangerous predators is indescribable and an activity that shouldn’t be missed—even if you are viewing the sharks from the boat! If you’re interested in participating in a shark diving excursion, the best time to enjoy one is from June to September, although many providers do offer shark dive safaris year-round.

nile_crocodileThey lurk quietly through rivers and are camouflaged by canopying trees, attack with intense force, and during leisure time, enjoy basking on riverbanks beneath the blistering sun. The crocodile, known by its vicious, man-eating reputation, is one of Africa’s most mesmerizing creatures.

Famous for being the largest crocodilian species in Africa, the Nile crocodile can grow up to 20 ft. long and weigh up to 1,650 lbs.! Average length though is usually 16 ft. and typical weight is 500 lbs.

Equipped with a gaping and powerful jaw lined with large, deadly teeth, the crocodile can easily attack and kill its oblivious prey. Crocodiles have been known to attack very large creatures such as zebra and buffalo. When crocodiles attack large prey, it usually occurs when the prey is drinking from the river, unaware of the danger lurking beneath the water on the river’s edge that’s planning its attack.

Here are 10 crocodile facts you might not know:

1. Nile crocodiles often eat up to half their body weight during one feeding. That means they can ingest over 250 lbs. of food in one sitting.

2. Crocodiles have been worshiped by some, including Egyptians. During several Egyptian tomb discoveries, explorers found mummified crocodiles and crocodile eggs.

3. The current record for largest crocodile was found in Queensland, Australia, in the year 1957. The crocodile was 28 ft. long, and weighed 2,870 lbs.

4. The Nile crocodile lives in rivers, freshwater marshes, and mangrove swamps of sub-Saharan Africa, making a canoe safari the perfect way to observe these spectacular creatures. There is no need to worry about danger though when on an African canoe safari, crocodiles don’t attack canoes!

5. Crocodiles spin around vigorously to tear chunks off of their prey after the initial attack.

6. Crocodiles typically eat fish, but have been known to eat anything large that crosses the forbidden threshold. Nile crocodiles have attacked and eaten zebra, small hippos, birds, buffalo, and porcupine. They’ll stop at nothing—they’ll even eat other crocodiles.

7. Crocodiles have been around since the dinosaurs and have changed very little since then.

8. Crocodiles are more closely related to birds and dinosaurs than most other reptiles.

9.  Nile crocodiles are actually quite caring when it comes to their young. Mother and father crocodiles guard their eggs with great care and roll the eggs in their mouths to help the little crocs out when they’re having trouble budding from the egg.

10. Crocodiles tend to attract cleaning services. While cooling off with their mouths open, crocodiles welcome birds to eat the remains of food off of their teeth and skin.

We want to take you on an in-depth tour of Africa and inspire you or your friends to travel to this magical destination. Africa is not even on the radar screen of many, many American travelers and we believe they are missing out on THE best African safari vacation of their lives.

There are 2 reasons Africa falls under the radar screen as a number 1 priority travel destination

1. Travelers UNDER estimate the greatness and variety of travel experiences on offer in Africa. From going on an African family safari and witnessing the planet’s largest animals and watching them in their natural habitat, to the winelands of Cape Town, tasting world class wines that have never touched American soil because it’s too difficult to compete on price with California wines, to shark cage-diving in Hermanus, to the surf in Durban and the tropical waters of Mozambique. A journey to Africa is so much more than going on a safari – but even the safari is incredible.  We at Hills of Africa Travel want to show you how much more there is to an African vacation.

2. Travelers OVER estimate the “dis-comfort” factor. Is it safe to travel without a group (Absolutely)? How many shots will I need (none!)? What will the food be like (better than AND as sophisticated as the finest New York restaurants)? We are a paranoid nation and many people expect it to be like a war-zone. We want to bring to you the reassurance that it is one of the most charming, endearing places you will ever visit with an element of warm hospitality you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

From Hills of Africa Travel, you will be exposed to the beauty and charm of Africa. We will discuss the rich and fascinating culture, history, fabulous food and fine wines of that area. You’ll learn about the safari lodges which are luxurious, that cater to your every need, and have drop dead gorgeous decors.

The United States has lifted its travel ban to Zimbabwe! It’s always been one of the greatest safari destinations in the world. Nothing changed during the 7 or 8 year travel ban – the wildlife is still outstanding, the country grooms the BEST guides in the world, the diversity is amazing…and right now, you cannot beat the price.

But the incredible travel deals won’t last long. Travel inquiries are flooding in to places like Victoria Falls and the lodges of Hwange National Park. So we want to educate you and help you be in front of the curve.

Please let us know if there is an area you’d love to learn more about!

The Magic of Hills of Africa Travel

Contributor: Christy Stewart View Profile

Luxury Tours: Planning a trip to Africa can be just as overwhelming as it is exciting. Thoughts of fierce felines and sun-drenched safaris can quickly turn to questions and concerns regarding one’s travel plans and safety. When planning a trip to Africa, one’s best bet is to rely on the experience and expertise of a seasoned travel professional. That’s where Hills of Africa Travel comes in.

Specializing in customized African safari tours, Hills of Africa Travel offers the discerning traveler an array of invaluable resources. From honeymoon to family safaris, the company provides a unique experience from beginning to end.

Based in the United States, Hills of Africa Travel has been providing clients with superior service since 2000. As the company’s directors, Meredith Hill and Sandy Salle’s passion for Africa is conveyed through their dedication and determination to provide clients with an unforgettable trip of a lifetime.

“Our mission is to change lives, one journey at a time…every time. We know that when we apply our passion to creating our clients’ itineraries, we definitely change their lives when they travel,” says Meredith Hill, president of Hills of Africa Travel.

In addition to changing the lives of its clients, Hills of Africa Travel strives to leave a lasting footprint on the African community.

“The amazing thing is that there is another side to the mission. We intend to change the lives of the locals in Africa, too,” says Hill.

To ensure client satisfaction, Hills of Africa Travel utilizes local experts and tour operators who possess a vast knowledge of the African culture. Each itinerary is custom-tailored to fit individual needs and, unlike other tour companies, no two itineraries are alike.

According to Hill, the company’s relatively small size is what sets them apart from the rest. While other leading tour operators generally offer cookie-cutter itineraries and partner up with specific properties based on volume discounts, Hills of Africa Travel goes against the grain.

“We are small — and proud of it. We have no intention of being ‘big,’” Hill says. “Being small gives us many luxuries that benefit the client. For one, we are able to custom design every single itinerary for our clients.”

Though the company may be small in size, its scope seems endless. Hills of Africa Travel has locations in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Victoria Falls and has contacts spanning southern and East Africa. From the moment a client steps foot on African soil, he or she is welcomed by a member of the team and attended to as though he or she is family.

Like many discerning travelers, Africa was not Hill’s first destination of choice. As a self-proclaimed travel snob, Hill assumed Africa was “dark, dangerous, dusty, full of poverty” and couldn’t possibly offer the luxury travel experiences she desired. However, after making a trip to meet her boyfriend’s family, she was hooked.

“What I found was the most perfect travel experience ever. There was scenery so incredible it made me want to cry. It was as if the colors were brighter, the smells stronger and the sounds more beautiful. There was the wildlife — so magnetic, powerful. I could sit, for hours, in complete silence, just watching — never had an experience like it,” says Hill.

“I was blown away by the level of sophistication, the awesome and novel décor, the amazing food and the warm and charming sense of personalities. Then there were the people. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with open arms, big smiles and an element of warm hospitality I have not found anywhere else in the world. This is the Africa I know today.”

Hill has been drawn to Africa ever since and describes its energy as being pure and clean.

“It is food for our soul. It is an amazing, magnetic and peaceful experience. I always return from my trips there with a newfound energy and zest for life,” says Hill.

The friendly, personalized service continues well after the client returns home. In an ongoing effort to provide clients with the best service possible, a follow-up call is made to the client to discuss the details of the trip.

Africa truly offers something for everyone and with Hills of Africa Travel in your corner, you’re sure to experience all of the magic this amazing country has to offer. Any reservations one might have about traveling within Africa are put to rest as Hill’s team of experts is there for you every step of the way.

Soul Safari
While Hills of Africa Travel prides itself on creating customized itineraries, when the chance to work with acclaimed author and psychic, Ainslie MacLeod, presented itself, they knew this was an opportunity not to be missed. MacLeod’s book, The Instruction: Living the Life Your Soul Intended, has been well-received by critics and has even been featured on Oprah.

On October 19, 2009, 32 lucky soul searchers will have the opportunity to join MacLeod and the Hills of Africa Travel team for nine days on a spiritual journey through South Africa. Together, MacLeod and Hills of Africa Travel will guide you through a quest to decode the purpose of the soul and achieve newfound clarity, all under a captivating African backdrop.

The Lion Sands Private Game Reserve ecologist’s April report is in, and it appears that April was a delightful month for Lion Sands’ guests. Since April tends to be a dryer month, many animals were seen eating small crustaceans and vertebrates in the pans and mud pools that are beginning to dry.

Visitors to the Lion Sands Game Reserve in April were rewarded with plentiful sightings of wild game, especially lion and leopard. And, as usual, the Big Five sightings were exceptional!

Birds spotted during the month of April included African fish eagles, and saddlebilled and woollynecked storks. Several migrating species were also spotted, such as the Eurasian bee-eaters and woodland kingfishers.

Reptiles spotted during the month of April included the tree agama, African rock python, Nile crocodile, and Mozambique spitting cobra. With the colder weather approaching, reptile sightings were less frequent because they’ve been seeking shelter from the chilled air.

Lion sightings were extraordinary during the month of April. Both the Southern Pride and Hilda’s Rock Pride were regularly spotted, which was a great treat for Lion Sands’ guests. There have been occasion sightings of a single female from the Hilda’s Rock Pride over the past several months. The reason for the solo female lion is because the rest of Hilda’s Rock Pride has moved south of Lion Sands to neighboring parts of Kruger National Park. The Lion Sands’ ecologist is not absolutely positive what triggered these lions to move to other parts of Kruger Park, but has a sound theory. According to the Lion Sands’ ecologist report, “Lion prides are a socially complex arrangement and the move might have to do with a change in their social structure or interactions with other prides.”

There is speculation that the solo female lion has a group of cubs sheltered in the riverine vegetation. Guests were delighted to see three of the female’s adorable cubs playing in the grasslands while she basked in the hot, African sun. Future guests to the Lion Sands Game Reserve can look forward to spotting these cubs as they grow older.

Leopard sightings during the month of April were outstanding! With up to three leopards being spotted on each African safari tour, guests saw leopards mating and hunting. Several kills included impala, duiker, scrub hare, and banded mongoose.

The chart below was taken from the Lion Sands’ ecologist’s report and “indicates the percentage of Big Five sightings in the month of April on game drives on Lion Sands Private Game Reserve.”

hippo_teeth_yawn

Many of us tend to believe the lion is the fiercest of the African safari animals, but there is one mammal that unexpectedly might be more ferocious than the lion . . . the hippopotamus. Compared to lions and snakes, the hippo has killed the most humans. Although hippos tend to look cute and cuddly, they have a vicious side to them and will stop at nothing when charging full speed. So, if you’re ever standing between a hippo and a lion (which would never happen on a safari!), it might behoove you to walk toward the lion . . .

Hippos usually live in water during their entire day, either completely underwater or partially submerged. Usually, the only time a hippo goes on land is at night to feed on grass. They must do this because they do not eat plants that grow in the water.

Hippos have a large variety of features that are highly adaptable for life in the water. The thick fat beneath the hippos’ skin enables them to stay buoyant enough to float on the surface if they wish. Their four-toed hooves are webbed, which allows them to easily swim throughout the water. Hippos love water so much that their babies are even born underwater.

Did you know?

• Weighing up to 4,400 lbs, the hippo is the second largest non-marine mammal.

• Hippos use their tails to fling feces at each other as a way of marking their territory . . . it’s true. And, disgustingly enough, baboons enjoy eating “hippo territory.”

• The eyes, ears, and nose on a hippo are located on the top of its head, which makes the hippo highly adapted for living in water.

• Hippos typically rise to the surface after about five minutes to take a breath of air, but can stay submerged for up to 15 minutes.

• Hippo groups usually consist of 10 – 15 females and one alpha male.

• A hippo’s mouth can open a shocking 150 degrees wide.

• Hippos sweat red. Their modified sweat glands secrete a red, sunscreen-like substance when they become too hot, which enables them to protect their delicate skin from the sun and repel pesky bugs.

• According to Animal Planet, “the hippopotamus is more closely related to whales and porpoises than it is to other land animals.”
