Below you’ll find 10 more reasons why Africa should be your number one honeymoon destination:

11. Daredevil opportunities: From white water rafting in the Zambezi River to bungee jumping at Victoria Falls, and shark diving off the coast of Cape Town to gorilla trekking in Uganda, eastern and southern Africa are synonymous with an adrenaline-lover’s paradise. Why not challenge your inner adventurists together as a newly married couple?

12. Chocolate & Wine Pairing Tours: What is more romantic than indulging in a combination of artisan chocolates and wines? So ignite your senses, pamper your palette, and treat your mind to a private Chocolate & Wine Pairing tour through South Africa’s legendary Cape Winelands.

13. Quaint restaurants: Acclaimed by the international culinary community, Cape Town, South Africa is an absolute must-visit destination for food and wine lovers. With a wide spectrum of eclectic cafes, charming bistros, luxurious restaurants, and trendy wine, bourbon, and martini bars, Cape Town has made a name for itself as a celebrated culinary destination. Aside from traditional Cape Malay cuisine, you can enjoy everything from Mediterranean cuisine to Asian-fusion dishes, and French delights to Italian feasts.

14. Time warp: Take a step back in time as you venture to some of eastern and southern Africa’s most historically known locales, such as Robben Island—where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned as a political prisoner; the ancient rock paintings of Drakensberg Park; Livingstone—where you can follow the footsteps of David Livingstone; and Vredefort Dome—the oldest and biggest meteorite site in the entire world.

15. Secluded ambiance: Whether you’re an internationally-known personality or simply crave a romantic getaway in complete privacy, the boutique accommodations and private reserves of southern and eastern Africa provide you with complete seclusion from droves of other travelers.
16. Bush baths: Imagine relaxing with a glass of champagne in an outdoor bubble-filled bush bath, together, as you overlook a nearby watering hole. The air is filled with the relaxing aromas and sounds of nature and there is no one around but you, your spouse, and the residential wildlife.

Below is our list of the top things to see and do while visiting Botswana:

Walk with the San Bushmen: Experience a day in the life of the San Bushmen on an interactive bush walk with members from local San Tribes. On these guided excursions, you’ll be welcomed with open arms by local tribesmen who are eager to share with you their culture and extensive knowledge about survival and the secrets of their land. Specifically, you’ll discover ancient survival skills, hunting techniques, tribal weaponry, and the laws of nature. You’ll also be able to witness the San Bushmen interact in their traditional language, which consists of various “click” sounds.

Where to stay: Grassland Lodge

Fly above the Okavango Delta: Sour over 5,600 square miles of sprawling grasslands, woodlands, winding waterways, and blue lagoons via helicopter to get a bird’s eye view of the breathtaking Okavango Delta. From up above, you’ll have the opportunity to see just how far the Okavango Delta spreads across this lush land. During your adventurous, air-born excursion, you’ll witness herds of zebra, antelope, and wildebeest, as well as clusters of hippo, crocodile, and giraffe speckled along the ground below. You’ll even have the opportunity to capture the spectacular sights from above via camera.

Where to stay: The Delta Camp

Discover the beauty of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans: As the remains of a legendary lake that once spread across a large chunk of southern Africa thousands of years ago, the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans now fill with water during seasonal rains and attract an abundance of diverse wildlife. Some of the residential creatures that visit the salt pans include large flocks of flamingos and other migratory birds, zebra, wildebeest, hippos, meerkats, gemsbok, and much more. One of the best ways to view these fascinating animals is on a walking safari through the salt pans. And after a long morning on foot, find pure bliss and relaxation at the prehistoric beaches of the Makgadikgadi.

Where to stay: Jack’s Camp

Explore Linyanti on a walking safari: Travel through acres upon acres of untouched woodlands and river banks on a walking safari through the world-famous Linyanti Wildlife Reserve. On this exciting adventure through the bush, you’ll be escorted by knowledgeable expert guides who will take you deep within the Botswana wilderness to discover the mysterious creatures and terrain that make up this vast region. During your walk, you’ll stop to listen to the sounds of indigenous birds, observe bizarre insects, follow mammals via tracks in the ground, and learn about an abundance of plant life. You’ll also enjoy a delightful picnic in the Botswana bush as you replenish your body before finishing your journey.

Where to stay: Selinda Camp

Float down the Chobe River: From sunrise to sunset, you’ll never find a dull moment on the Chobe River. Whether you’re exploring the river via mokoro (traditional canoe) or sunset cruise, you’ll find a world of unspoiled wilderness within hands reach. Specifically, the river banks are popular feeding and meeting grounds for crocodile, hippo, elephant, giraffe, and lechwe, and the surrounding woodlands and shrubs are the ideal setting for fantastic bird sightings.

During an evening sunset cruise, not only will you be able to observe the sights and sounds of the surrounding residential wildlife, but you’ll also witness one of the most astonishing sunsets in the entire world. And you can even unwind with a glass of champagne or a famous sun downer cocktail—a favorite among visitors!

Determined to extinguish, or at least reduce these threats, Great Plains Conservation has established the Elephant Footprint program. This conservation program is focused primarily on one of the last places on earth where elephants are in large numbers, the Selinda Reserve in Botswana. Nearly 9,000 elephants reside in Selinda after each dry season, thanks to Great Plains Conservation’s exceptional efforts to help sustain the local environment.

According to Great Plains Conservation, before they acquired the land, a whopping 75% of Selinda’s territory was used for trophy hunting. Now, elephants are less timid and more comfortable with their surroundings, and lion and other animal populations have increase dramatically.

Because Selinda is a sanctuary for several endangered animals, including wild dogs, several bird species, leopards, and elephants, it’s a special treat to be able to see these creatures in abundance in their most natural habitat. In addition to a plethora of various animal species, Selinda Reserve is also known for its thriving eco-systems that sustain the delicate wildlife of the area. With 300,000 acres of land, windy rivers, and swamps, Selinda is one of the liveliest regions in Africa. Without the efforts from Great Plains Conservation, this region’s magnificent species and delicate eco-systems would still be under major threat.

Dedicated to conserving the environment through low impact, exceptional tourism, and community involvement, Great Plains Conservation is doing everything in their power to make the environment, the economy, and the community sustainable. Their belief is simple: “We believe that ownership is less about laying claim to a vast tract of land like this, than it is about taking care of it and making it better than we found it (Great Plains Conservation).”

Great Plains Conservation is so dedicated to conserving the area that they only accommodate a maximum of 32 guests in their tented camps at all times. They believe this is the solution to having a lower impact on the region’s environment and providing each and every guest with the African safari vacation of a lifetime. With thousands of acres for guest to explore, Selinda’s camps are some of the most exceptional, unique, and intimate in all of Africa.
With the goal to expand conservation protection, Great Plains is working hard to build an elephant safe-haven that spans from the Chobe National Park, to the Moremi, to Namibia, and hopefully, to Angola.

Honeymoons only happen once. Don’t you want yours to be the most memorable experience of your life? If so, a honeymoon safari in Botswana is the ultimate romantic getaway for you and your loved one.

With so many wonderful places to stay in Botswana, it can be difficult to find the perfect one that’s ideal for your honeymoon. Since each and every camp and lodge in Botswana differs from activities, ambiance, services, and amenities, it’s essential to find one that fits around your every individual preference. Whether you’re looking for the epitome of romance, or the adventure of a lifetime, Botswana has it all. With a variety of luxurious and intimate accommodations, and a wide range of more rustic and adventurous camps, Botswana is the ideal retreat for lovers.

Here are two of Hills of Africa Travel’s favorite honeymoon accommodations in Botswana:

Mombo Camp:

If you’re thinking of “camp” in the traditional sense of the word, then you’ve got it all wrong. Mombo Camp is comprised of nine canvas “pavilions,” which are completely unrelated to “pitched tents.” These raised, luxurious pavilions are connected by wooden walkways that serve as a canopy for Mombo Camp’s diverse eco-system. Each private pavilion provides guests with their very own en-suite facilities as well as a private outdoor shower and balcony overlooking a vast floodplain.

White linen-covered beds, his and hers washbasins, complimentary organic bath salts and lotions, mahogany floors, and soft lighting fixtures are just a few features that are unique to Mombo Camp. In addition to a romantic interior setting, each pavilion has a private veranda, lounge chairs, and a walkway that leads to a private sala that is perfect for napping, observing wildlife, and soaking in nature.

Kwetsani Camp:

Situated among expansive floodplains and riverine forest-covered islands, Kwetsani Camp exudes a quiet and intimate atmosphere that’s perfect for honeymooners. The Camp’s five, tree-house chalets provides guests with a rejuvenating ambiance that’s ideal for relaxation after a day of game-viewing, sunbathing, or island excursions. Each chalet features en-suite facilities, a spacious living area, and an interior décor that’s reflective of the African bush. Built from thatch, wood, glass, and canvas, these nature-inspired chalets allow guests to remain immersed in Africa’s natural world, while experiencing sheer luxury.

With amenities including a dining room, lounge and pub area, and a pool—which all overlook a sprawling floodplain—guests can constantly observe Africa’s bewildering wildlife. They can even observe residential red lechwe, wildebeest, and antelope from the privacy of their own chalet.

Activities offered by Kwetsani Camp include a variety of land-based, as well as water-based activities, depending on the annual flood levels. Guests can enjoy canoe (mokoro) safaris, island walking safaris, and a variety of game drives during both the daytime and nighttime. Since Botswana is comprised of many wetlands, a wealth of wildlife is attracted to the area. Animals often spotted on Botswana safari tours include lion, cheetah, leopard, African wild dog, red lechwe, hippo, antelope, and crocodile. In addition to its plethora of animal species, Botswana is also known for being a bird lover’s paradise. With exotic birds, such as the wattled crane, slaty egret, rosy-throated longclaw, and the pygmy goose, it’s no wonder bird enthusiasts love Botswana.

Experience the ultimate African honeymoon in one of Botswana’s most romantic accommodations. Let Hills of Africa Travel create your ideal Botswana honeymoon safari itinerary tailored to your every individual preference. Contact us today at (800) 940-9344. Home to some of the world’s most exotic birds, game, reptiles, and amphibians, the Chobe and Linyanti National Reserves in Botswana are just as pristine and untouched as they were when the first European explorers visited the region centuries ago.

Heavily filmed by National Geographic, the Chobe and Linyanti National Reserves are prime areas to observe some of the world’s most spectacular creatures and landscapes, and are arguably the best places in the world to observe elephants. Visitors on an African family safari or honeymoon safari to the Chobe and Linyanti Reserves observe a wide spectrum of animals, thanks to the diverse natural surroundings of each river system. The varying terrain boasts a plethora of diverse eco-systems including marshes, waterways, riverine forests, dry woodlands, and the infamous Savuti Channel.

Connecting the Linyanti River and the Zibadianja Lagoon, the Savuti Channel is one of Botswana’s most gorgeous havens for birds and wildlife. Since two-thirds of the Savuti Channel is private reserve, guests observe wild game from exclusive and private locations.

Botswana safari tour guests choose from a handful of safari trips:

A Chobe River cruise safari is an excellent way to observe wildlife in luxury. Offering adventurists a fresh perspective on animal behavior, the intricate Chobe River provides a place for animals to bathe, play, and drink from. Buffalos and elephants are the primary attractions on this type of safari, as well as African skimmers, kites, and eagles. In addition to observing animals behaving in a different environment, a Chobe River cruise safari boasts a large variety of water-dwelling animals, including crocodile, monitor lizards, and hippos. Nothing is more relaxing than the thrill of birds flying overhead, crocodiles lurking in the waters, and hippos charging, all from the comfort and luxury of a river cruise safari. The evening is the perfect time to enjoy a Chobe River cruise safari since it’s the best way to unwind from a long day in the sun and sip a chilling cocktail.

Game Drives through the Chobe and Linyanti National Reserves are some of the most rewarding experiences for visitors on a Botswana safari trip. The Chobe Reserve celebrates large populations of buffalo, giraffe, impala, wildebeest, roan, zebra, and more, while the Linyanti Reserve is famous for its high concentrations of sable, lion, leopard, wild dog, hippo, zebra, buffalo, and antelope.Game drives in the morning are the perfect time to observe nature take its course as predators stalk their prey in the bush. Visitors to the Chobe and Linyanti region frequently see leopards attacking baboons and cheetahs stalking lechwe.

Walking safaris through the National Reserves provide guests with a rare insight into the surrounding eco-systems. For those itching to show-off their photography skills, a smooth and slow-pace walking safari offers visitors the perfect opportunity to snap images of nature in motion. Visitors have the chance to capture over 350 species of bird on film, as well as large herds of elephants, bathing and playing around the river systems.

Watch as it sprints through chest-deep water to avoid a cheetah or lion. Simply observing its sudden and quick movements sends a jolt of adrenaline through your spine with the speculation that there may be a kill.

Vulnerable to crocodiles, snakes, leopards, lion, and hyenas, the red lechwe must be on the look-out at all times. Frequently using the water as a refuge from predators, the red lechwe is almost always seen wading in swamps, floodplains, and water holes.

The red lechwe is characterized by a dark, reddish-brown coat, and long, thin horns, that are frequently used by the male lechwes as a way to express dominance. The males who are the most dominant obtain the best territory and can pick from a large number of females.

What makes the red lechwe so fascinating?

• The red lechwe is a semiaquatic antelope that practically lives in shallow water. With hooves designed to stand strong in soft and muddy ground, the red lechwe is extremely fast when running through water, but awkward and slow when attempting to run on land.

• When threatened, the red lechwe sprints to deeper water, leaping with its powerful hindquarters.

• Since the water acts as a safe haven for red lechwe, they migrate with the flood waters.

• The red lechwe sleeps on termite mounds during the day in order to raise itself high enough to see the surrounding territory and prevent being surprised by unwanted predators. To prevent dangerous animals from spotting them, the red lechwe lays low to the ground while it sleeps.

• Most red lechwe herds consist of 20 – 30 members, but can reach into the hundreds.

• Red lechwe feed on grass and aquatic vegetation during the night and can be observed searching for food shoulder deep in the water. Many times the red lechwe will travel a number of miles to find food.

• The Okavango Delta is the most populated area with red lechwe, with an estimated 30,000 inhabiting the area.

Explore the vast region of the Okavango Delta in Botswana on a Botswana honeymoon safari or family safari. Famous for its diverse terrain of sprawling floodplains, thriving grasslands, remote islands, savannah, and bushveld the Okavango Delta is, without a doubt, a prized areas for game-viewing and birding.

For those looking to visit the Okavango on a Botswana honeymoon safari or family safari, the Duba Plains camp boasts the perfect combination of luxury, authenticity, and intimate ambiance. Located on the private Kwedi Reserve, Duba Plains is a small camp surrounded by spanning trees and a gorgeous backdrop. This camp embodies its reputation for being one of Africa’s prime places to observe year-round beauty and experience adventures of a lifetime.

Duba Plains is unique in its relationship with the community, bringing the benefits of ecotourism to the locals. To ensure the wealth from ecotourism is divvied up equally, the five villages in the area have formed the Okavango Community Trust. Partnering with the Trust is one of Hills of Africa Travel’s favorite Botswana ecotourism company, Wilderness Safaris.

Not only does Wilderness Safaris lease camp grounds from the community, but they also contribute to the local economy by employing people of the community. This ensures a more positive lifestyle for the locals who are trained and paid by Wilderness Safaris.

In addition to lending support to the local community, Wilderness Safaris’ Duba Plains camp is one of the most intimate places to stay on a Botswana honeymoon safari or family safari.
