Guest post by Cape Fusion Tour Guide, Pam McOnie

This section aims to be an update of new restaurants that I have tried or want to try in Cape Town and the surrounding wine regions. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list—merely a list of what looks really exciting for this season. We are blessed to live in Cape Town, a creative hub where new restaurants open all the time. As such, our aim is to keep working our way through the exciting offerings in our city!

If you missed Part I or Part II of this post, view them by clicking the links below:

New In Cape Winelands (view post IV in this series for more new restaurants in Cape Winelands):

The Long Table at Haskell Wine Estate (also known as Dombeya Wine Estate): This estate is an absolutely delightful addition to the Stellenbosch Winelands. It is set on the side of a small mountain and the tables are right next to the vineyards. The Long Table offers a relaxed setting, delightful accessible dishes that will appeal to all tastes, and is a great value for the prices.

Image above taken from the Long Table Restaurant website.

The menu boasts something that will appeal to everyone in a group visiting. The food is not unnecessarily fussy, yet is beautifully plated with great attention to detail. It is a winning combination and I would highly recommend it for a relaxed afternoon with friends. For those who are fans of New Zealand sauvignon blanc, Haskell is importing it and offering it at a very reasonable price on the menu. Dombeya is their range of accessibly priced wines, and Haskell is their premium red range of wines that are extremely good. Tastings of the Haskell range of wines are only available on the weekends, as are tastings of their imported range. HASKELL VINEYARDS, STELLENBOSCH. Telephone no.: 021- 881 3746 / 021-881-3895 / www.longtable.co.za / Open Tues to Sunday for breakfast and lunch. Open Thursday and Friday early evening for sundowners and snack platters.

Image to the left of a Tokara dish, taken from the Tokara website.

Tokara: This vineyard has been slightly redecorated and re-launched with a new owner and new chef, Richard Carstens. Carstens has, for some years, followed the El Buil style of deconstruction cooking. In his former career he headed up the kitchen of Lynton Hall in Natal, he teamed up with Monolo in Cape Town, and launched his own restaurant in Cape Town. There is no doubt that he is an excellent chef.

Tokara restaurant boasts one of the loveliest views of Stellenbosch from its terrace, as such, to get the best enjoyment out of the visit, it is recommended that you book on the outside terrace. The restaurant is relaxed; there is no need to dress up to visit. Note that the service is formal and that the food is fine dining at its most complicated. For the average person, you would need to have extensive foodie knowledge to understand the menu! Despite the challenge and lack of any idea of what is coming once you have ordered, the food is extremely good and the dishes are highly creative. TOKARA RESTAURANT, Tokara Estate, Hellshoogte Pass, STELLENBOSCH. For reservations, call +27 21 885 2550 or email reservations@tokara.com / www.tokararestaurant.co.za / Open Tuesday – Saturday for lunch and dinner.

Restaurant Christophe (in Stellenbosch town): Christophe is married to the family who owns Joostenberg wine estate. Here he set up a deli and restaurant in the countryside. It must be said that this is one of my favorite delis in the Cape. Due to their location they needed to do an inexpensive menu for local families and, as such, the dishes were simple and delicious. Occasionally, I would book the food- and wine-pairing menu and then we could experience the true talents of this fantastic chef. As such, it is really exciting to hear that he has started a fine dining venture in Stellenbosch town. This is a definite one for foodies to try and track down and experience if they are in Stellenbosch town.

This spot opened last year and it was already shortlisted as one of the TOP 20 restaurants in the country by Eat Out magazine. Note that the décor inside is a bit austere, but there is also a lovely little courtyard. 44 Ryneveld Street, Stellenbosch town / open for lunch Tuesday – Friday, dinner Monday – Saturday / Cuisine: classic French bistro / Tel no: 021-886-8763

Ryan’s Kitchen: This new, small, fine-dining establishment has a focus on incorporating local flavors into the dishes. It is quaintly located in Rusthof Guesthouse on the main drag of Franschhoek (Huguenot Street, near Le Quartier). The kitchen is open plan and, as such, you are very welcome to watch the dishes being prepared by Chef Ryan Smith. www.ryanskitchen.co.za / Open Tuesday – Sunday / Telephone no. 021-8764598

Celebrated for its century-old, family-owned vineyards and estates, exceptional wine varietals, and award-winning wine makers, Stellenbosch is one of the most appealing and charming wine regions on the planet. But Stellenbosch offers travelers so much more than a fantastic wine tasting and vineyard experience—it provides visitors with a wealth of cultural and historical activities, as well as exceptional golfing, shopping, and touring options.

Below is our miniguide to exploring the Stellenbosch region of Cape Winelands, South Africa:

Golfing: With several golf courses in and around the area, Stellenbosch provides a handful of great golfing options for visitors. The Devonvale Golf & Wine Estate is arguably Cape Wineland’s finest course and is an absolute must for avid golfers. Situated along the Bottelary Valley Hills, Devonvale Golf Course is a world-class 18-hole course acclaimed for its manicured greens and diverse plant life. When you’re not golfing, taste some of Devonvale’s exceptional and bold wines, including their Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Shopping: The shopping experience in Stellenbosch can easily be described as quaint and charming. You won’t find any huge international stores or famous designer shops. Rather, you’ll come across charming boutiques, offering high-end products that are unique to the area. Many of the shops and boutiques you’ll find in Stellenbosch include art studios, jewelry shops, antique stores, clothing boutiques, cheese and olive shops, and, of course, wine shops. During your shopping experience, you’ll find the locals to be extremely welcoming and pleasant, and the streets and shops to be cozy and inviting.

Image to the left taken from the Bites & Sites website.

Food and Wine Tours: Famous for its culinary and wine scenes, Stellenbosch has a variety of tour operators that offer exceptional food and wine tours. Bites & Sites is one such operator that provides food and wine lovers with a delightful tasting and cultural experience in historic Stellenbosch. From walking tours that spotlight the authentic Cape cuisine to wine estate tours, and traditional Xhosa and Cape Malay Cooking classes to chocolate and dessert tasting walks, Bites & Sites’ tours accommodate all tastes and preferences.

Culture and History: Stellenbosch is home to a handful of great museums, including the Stellenbosch Toy Museum (where visitors can see miniature houses, antique dolls, cars, and toys) the Sasol Art Museum, the Anton Rupert Museum, and the Stellenbosch Village Museum. You can also enjoy tours of Stellenbosch, soaking in the magnificent Cape Dutch architecture and learning about the Dutch influence on the area.

See below for Part VI of this series, which focuses on a portion of the Greater Simonsberg Ward:

GREATER SIMONSBERG WARD

Thelema: This property is home to the really talented winemaker Giles Webb. The Stellenbosch property is located on the mountain pass between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Consequently, they have the ground at different altitudes and facing different directions, allowing them to have hot and cool slopes. As a result, they can do really good white and red wines. There is a broad spectrum of wines to try, from nice sauvignon blancs to a great chardonnay, and their flagship cabernet sauvignon. In addition, they have purchased land in Elgin (which is a cooler region) and you will be able to also taste wines from that region on the farm. Note that this estate is really beautiful, so it is worth a drive to see the setting! www.thelema.co.za

Image above taken from Thelema.co.za.

Delaire-Graaf: This property was bought by Mr. Graaf of the London jeweller fame. He has poured millions of pounds into the property, developing a jaw-dropping, beautiful restaurant and hotel. To me, this was always the one property in the Winelands that offered the most magnificent view, so it is great to see the view maximized! If you are looking to spoil yourself while you are doing your wine day, or you’re in search of a spot to do a romantic lunch, then this is a definite for inclusion. It is well worth a stop here to check out the art and the landscaped gardens. www.delaire.co.za

Camberley: This small family owned estate offers excellent red wines. It is safer to call before popping in to check if they are home for a tasting. tel: +27 21 885 1176. www.camberley.co.za

Note the below estates are classified as the same wine ward, they are, however, on the other side of Stellenbosch on the R44 in the direction of Paarl.

Warwick: Owned by one of the first female winemakers in the country, Norma Ratcliffe, Warwick is quite famous in the wine industry. Norma faced the challenge of overcoming the stereotype that all winemakers were men and has had a hard challenge setting up the estate. When South Africa wines started entering the overseas markets again after 1990, her Trilogy and Three Cape Ladies were among the first of our wines to get a rating of over 90 points in US Wine Spectator Magazine.

Image above of the Three Cape Ladies wine label, taken from Warwickwine.com.

Norma has now retired, her legacy of creating great wines continues with Trilogy (called Warwick Estate wine in the U.S.), getting rated as one of the Top 100 wines in the world by US Wine Spectator Magazine this year. Note that the Three Cape Ladies is well worth tasting—it is what we call a Cape blend, which is any red blend that contains Pinotage (a varietal unique to South Africa).

In addition, they rarely taste their Cab Frank (excellent), so if you want to taste this one, you will have to purchase a bottle, which I would highly recommend! Warwick does a delightful tasting outside on their terrace overlooking the dam. This includes the story of the wedding cup, which is their logo. For something different, you can book their Big 5 Wine Safari, which is a fun little tour of the farm and takes you past their big 5 wine varietals in a 4×4 vehicle to the top of the farm for a wine tasting. The views from the top are amazing.

Warwick also offers a picnic lunch on their lawn. This is a lovely option for people with kids because it features a jungle gym, has lots of lawn for the kids to run around on, and kids can also play games such as cricket and boulle. Warwick has also started offering a special “dish of the day” on their menu each day. So if you are in the area and need something to eat you can either get a snack, a meal, or a picnic. For the wine safari, it is best to book in advance during summer. www.warwickwine.com

Laibach: This small family owned estate is right next door to Warwick. Part of their vineyard has now gone fully organic and their organic Ladybird range is really good, so stop for a quick tasting before visiting Warwick. They are committed to sustainability and, as such, have initiated projects such as recycling water, and starting a wormery! www.laibachwines.com

Kanonkop: As a well-established award-winning estate, Kanonkop boasts excellent reds. Their pinotage is one of my favorites and comes from old bush vines on the estate. They have a highly rated cabernet sauvignon, but it is often sold out really quickly and not available for tasting once it is gone. The Paul Sauer red blend is always excellent and worth buying and keeping to age. If you arrive and find more than six people at the tasting counter, I suggest backing out as they don’t multitask well! If you have a group of 15 or more, you can book to do a traditional Snoek Braai. I have heard that the braai’s are amazing. (Translation: “Snoek” a traditional Cape game fish, “Braai” what we call BBQ!) www.kanonkop.co.za

11. Daredevil opportunities: From white water rafting in the Zambezi River to bungee jumping at Victoria Falls, and shark diving off the coast of Cape Town to gorilla trekking in Uganda, eastern and southern Africa are synonymous with an adrenaline-lover’s paradise. Why not challenge your inner adventurists together as a newly married couple?

12. Chocolate & Wine Pairing Tours: What is more romantic than indulging in a combination of artisan chocolates and wines? So ignite your senses, pamper your palette, and treat your mind to a private Chocolate & Wine Pairing tour through South Africa’s legendary Cape Winelands.

13.
14. The air is filled with the relaxing aromas and sounds of nature and there is no one around but you, your spouse, and the residential wildlife.

See below for Part V of this series, which focuses on a portion of the Greater Simonsberg Ward:

GREATER SIMONSBERG WARD

Rustenberg: This wine estate is owned by the Barlow family (one of our most wealthy families) and dates back to 1683. The drive to the tasting room is so breathtakingly beautiful that an inclusion of Rustenberg is a great addition to a day out in the wine region. They are one of our most highly acclaimed estates and well-worth a visit by any wine connoisseur. In addition, the gardens are magnificent and I suggest doing a stroll past the historical Cape Dutch homesteads to explore the gardens after you have finished your wine tastings. Rustenberg recently sold off their Brampton range of wines and are finally allowing visitors to taste their top-end wines again! www.rustenberg.co.za

Image above taken from the Rustenberg website.

Glenelly: This portion is taken from Glenelly’s press release:

“Glenelley estate—located at the foothills of Simonsberg in Stellenbosch. GLENELLY used to be a fruit farm, but May-Elaine de Lencquesaing, the Grand Dame of Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, acquired the property in 2003 and transformed it into a wine farm. A 600 ton contemporary cellar was built, in which gravity plays a huge role throughout the processing stages to assist with traditional winemaking techniques and to obtain the best quality. Their portfolio will ultimately be crowned by their flagship red blend, the Lady May, named in honour of our Grande Dame. The Lady May will be Cabernet Sauvignon based, with a touch of Petit Verdot (To be released in 2010). The core of our range is the Glenelly, which is a Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot blend, reflecting the partnership between a classical lady with a modern vision and a new world country with a historical terroir. In the near future, the Glenelly white will be released. This will be a lightly wooded, mineral Chardonnay drawing on inspiration from Burgundy. Zebra by Glenelly rounds off the range and is a fun loving red blend made in an easy drinking style to be celebrated with friends and family. www.glenellyestate.com”

I would recommend visiting Glenelly for the wonderful architecture and the fun in finding it! We will have to reassess on the wine once they have more to taste! The selection is very limited at the moment.

Image above taken from the Glenelly website.

Tokara: This prestigious estate is owned by GT Ferreira (a wealthy local who went into the wine business as his retirement venture; therefore, there was no shortage of funds setting it up!) and the wine maker is Miles Mossop (a hugely talented young wine maker who is also rather good looking!). Tokara is well-worth visiting just to see the architecture and the views. It is an exceptionally modern design which offers sweeping views of the Stellenbosch valley. I am a big fan of their sauvignon blanc, which they produce from grapes from different regions—it is great fun to do a vertical tasting of them to see the differences that terroir and style make on the taste.

Image above taken from the Tokara website.

Do not exit Tokara without tasting the Tokara flagship white and red blends. Mr. Ferreira’s wife has concentrated on developing an olive oil business on the property. Her oils are excellent and I stock up by the 6-pack when I am there. What is interesting is that they press the different olive varietals separately and sell them separately, as well as a blend. It is possible to taste the different varietals while you are there, if you ask. However for a superior tasting experience you can book a tutored tasting of the oils with a talk at Tokara Deli.

Note that there are two restaurants at Tokara—the main restaurant, which is next to the tasting room, offers contemporary Cape Winelands cuisine and will be offering tasting menus paired with the Tokara wines. The second restaurant is Tokara DeliCATessen. This is a better option if you have kids, as it has a play area and is a relaxed outdoor restaurant—they offer light meals, kids meals, and a light, healthy buffet. Note that the buffet is small so if you turn up after 1:30 p.m. you are unlikely to find much left to eat. www.tokara.co.za

We all have different reasons for seeking vacations. Some prefer to relax beachside in a motionless state, while others seek adventure and excitement. And then there are those people who are on a mission to explore and discover life’s hidden beauties and treasures. No matter the motivation behind your vacation, Africa is a continent that serves all desires, preferences, and personalities.

If you’re an individual who seeks vacations that embody relaxation, Africa might not come to mind as an option for your next trip. When you think of sitting on a beach, reading by the pool, or enjoying a quiet dinner for two beneath the stars, you might think of popular tropical locales such as the Caribbean, French Polynesia, and the British Virgin Islands. But what you might not realize is that Africa is one of the most relaxing destinations on earth. Whether you want to lay by your private plunge pool overlooking a game-rich watering hole, sleep and dine beneath the stars in a private bush den, experience a rejuvenating, nature-inspired spa treatment, or enjoy a leisurely horseback wine tasting tour in the majestic Cape Winelands, the options to completely unwind are truly endless.

Below are 5 of our favorite destinations in Africa that are perfect for relaxation:

Garden Route: It’s impossible not to melt into a state of sheer relaxation while visiting the Garden Route in South Africa. Comprised of majestic mountains, panoramic views, lush valleys full of wildflowers, lakes, forests, and miles upon miles of unspoiled white, powdery beaches, the Garden Route is a relaxation haven. Whether you want to lay by the ocean and soak in Africa’s brilliant sun rays, walk through fauna- and flora-rich valleys, fish in the many lakes, or enjoy a day of golfing, the Garden Route’s landscape ignites a sense of calmness within everyone who visits.

Cape Winelands: Home to acres upon acres of rolling hills and charming, family-owned wine estates and vineyards, it’s hard to argue that Cape Winelands isn’t the epitome of relaxation. With your first sight of sprawling vineyards, and your first sip of South African cabernet, your heart will melt with the feeling of comfort and warmth. After you’ve enjoyed a few wine tastings, read a book in one of the area’s manicured gardens, or enjoy a picnic in the camphor forest. This region is so relaxing that time seems to vanish and thoughts of responsibilities become a thing of the past.

Bazaruto Archipelago: Do you consider relaxation to be sipping a cocktail on a secluded beach as you stroll for seashells on the untouched shoreline? If so, then Bazaruto Archipelago is your heaven. Encrusted with pristine, white beaches, the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago are perfect for individuals who choose destinations primarily for their beaches.

Particularly stunning and romantic is the archipelago’s private island, Medjumbe. As an unbelievable haven for aquatic and island dwelling creatures, this extremely exclusive island is your place to unwind and find serenity in the ocean breeze.

Zanzibar: Beach lovers and ocean enthusiasts find pure paradise in Zanzibar. From blissful afternoons on the beach to snorkeling above a colorful fish-covered reef, and fresh lobster dinners on your private balcony to walking through a trans-inducing vanilla plantation, Zanzibar is celebrated for its pure tranquility. And to take your mind and body into an even deeper state of relaxation, enjoy a rejuvenating massage and spa treatment in the privacy of your very own beach villa or bungalow.

Lion Sands Private Game Reserve: Famous for their Chalkley Treehouse, Lion Sands offers couples a private retreat that immediately induces relaxation upon entering. Nestled in a 500-year-old leadwood tree, the Chalkley Treehouse is lit by the subtle glow of 19th-century-style lanterns that encircle a linen-lined bush bed and dining area. At night, guests can listen to the soft rhythm of the bush and enjoy a candlelit dinner beneath the stars. It’s impossible not to find pure relaxation in a setting so isolated and luxurious.

The reserve also offers astronomy lessons for guests interested in hearing about the solar system’s place in African folklore. All you have to do is sit back and soak in the beauty of the night’s sky. What could be more relaxing? In addition, the reserve offers golf excursions, and features a luxurious, state-of-the-art spa.

When we think of our dream honeymoon, we often picture a magical destination that embodies exclusivity and romance. A place where dreams come true and fantasies transform into reality. And when we leave? We’re left with shared memories that remain with us for eternity.

As one of the world’s most enchanting and romantic cities, it’s no wonder Cape Town, South Africa has positioned itself as one of the best honeymoon destinations. Centrally located among exquisite neighboring regions, including the Garden Route and Cape Winelands, honeymooners to Cape Town can enjoy a chic urban atmosphere, a serine beach setting, and a lush countryside.

1. Wine tasting on horseback: A short drive from Cape Town, Cape Winelands can be experienced in one day or several days—the choice is up to you. But beware: the pungent, earthy aromas and picturesque landscape of this vivid countryside will capture your heart instantly and beckon you to stay longer. And as soon as you embark on a wine tasting tour on horseback, you’ll want to stay forever in this charming village-life setting.

On this romantic and personalized horseback tour, you’ll pass through prestigious wine vineyards, sip sensational wines, and talk one-on-one with wine makers, all while century-old Cape Dutch, Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco architecture speckle the backdrop of your tour.

2. Explore the aphrodisiacs of Cape Town: A true lover’s retreat, Cape Town is full of aphrodisiacs that are sure to tickle the sense and satisfy your craving for romance. From freshly caught oysters to flavorful South Africa and international wines, to delectable chocolates to hot chilies and spices, Cape Town offers visitors some of the most delectable aphrodisiacs in the world.

For honeymooners who are oyster lovers, consider visiting South Africa at the end of July when the annual Knysna Oyster Festival takes place. And for chocolate lovers, you’ll definitely want to take part in a private Lindt chocolate-making class where you and your spouse can create chocolates together and delight in their sweetness!

3. Kirstenbosch Gardens: Imagine walking among hundreds of thousands of vibrant flowers as you inhale the pungent aromas of the sweet flora. At Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, you’ll find the most romantic setting to explore South Africa’s indigenous and most renowned flora and cultivated gardens. Comprised of nearly 528 hectares of manicured estate, Kirstenbosch Gardens sits along the breathtaking slopes of Table Mountain, which adds a dramatic contrast to the colorful gardens.

One of the best times to view the garden is during springtime–beginning in July–when bulbs and annuals burst to the surface. New life is present all around the garden–from busy insects to blooming proteas, and ericas to berry heath.

4. Spa treatments: Find inner balance on a couples retreat to one of Cape Town’s most luxurious and sensual spas. There is no better way to revitalize the mind, body, and soul after an African safari than with a signature spa treatment. You and your loved one can experience spa treatments that combine traditional healing powers of nature with revolutionary spa treatments—opportunities that allow you both to connect with the soothing nature of Africa. Many accommodations and spas also offer a bush bath treatment for you and your spouse, accompanied by soft rose petals, champagne, and soothing music.

5. Partake on the Peninsula Tour: Travel from Cape Point to the south-westerly point of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope, on a private tour where you’ll explore towering sea cliffs, exotic flora, astonishing wildlife, quaint walking trails, powdery beaches, and South Africa’s vibrant culture.

During this customized tour, you’ll visit Boulders Beach—home to South Africa’s most renowned species, the African penguin—where you’ll learn about the history and behavior of these adorable little creatures. You’ll also witness a variety of magnificent wildlife including baboons, bontebok, ostriches, an abundance of bird life, and the southern right whales. On the peninsula tour, you’ll not only be able to observe these animals in the wild, but you’ll also learn quirky facts about them, and perhaps even get up-close-and-personal with some.

6. Romantic dinners: Arguably Africa’s culinary capitol, Cape Town is bursting with exotic flavors, trendy dining spots, and romantic backdrops that lure foodies, jet setters, and romantics from around the world to experience one of the most unique culinary sensations in the world. Whether you want to sip international wines at a quaint bistro, experience a traditional contemporary French dining scene, or enjoy a candlelit dinner for two overlooking the sparkling city and harbor, you’re options are truly endless.

7. Mother City Tours: Known as the Mother City, Cape Town is one of Africa’s most culturally and historically rich cities. And the best way to experience all that Cape Town has to offer is on a Mother City Tour. During this tour, you’ll enjoy a trip up Table Mountain via rotating cable car, followed by a tour through the majestic Castle of Good Hope, as well as tours of the gardens, Green Point Light House, The Cape Town Stadium, V & A Waterfront (a phenomenal shopping and restaurant hot spot!), Die Bo Kaap, and District Six.
