We’ve been planning luxury safari adventures for nearly 10 years now, and some of the biggest factors that play a role in a traveler’s experience are the safari guides. Your guide is a vital component in determining what you’ll get out of your experience. In fact, a guide can take your vacation to an entirely new level just through his or her past experiences alone.

When you take a family vacation or honeymoon to Africa, you have a few options regarding who guides you through the bush. You can choose to utilize safari guides at the accommodations you visit, or you can arrange for a private guide to accompany you during your entire stay in Africa.

Although the safari guides at all of Africa’s luxurious accommodations are highly knowledgeable about Africa and its wildlife, a private guide tends to be more experienced and knowledgeable in all aspects of Africa. And unlike a group guide assigned to you at an accommodation, a private safari guide gets to know exactly what you want and will create a safari experience that is catered specifically to your interests. Therefore, your entire trip is a special interest safari.

A great private guide ensures that your adventures in Africa are consistent throughout your entire stay and has the ability to immerse you into the true spirit of Africa. He or she will be with you every day, teaching you about the mysteries of Africa and its fascinating wildlife and entertaining you, all while keeping your specific interests in mind. By the end of your trip, not only will you feel fulfilled in mind, body, and soul, but you’ll also have a newfound lifetime friendship with your guide.

And the best part about having your own guide is that you can experience a wide range of special interest safaris through just your one guide. For example, if you have a special place in your heart for giraffes, your personal guide has the ability to change his or her course throughout your game drive in order to observe more giraffes. What started out as a general game drive in the morning has now turned into a special interest safari, with you and your guide on a quest to track down your favorite animal in the African bush. This is something you would not be able to do on a group safari since the guide must accommodate the interests of the group as a whole. This scenario also applies for other areas of special interest including history, photography, culture, geography, and more.

Every private guide has his or her specialties and some are different than others. Therefore, if you want to spend your entire trip on a specialized safari such as a bird photography safari, you’ll want to ask your safari travel agent to find a private guide that also specializes in wildlife photography. Or, if you wanted to spend just one day on a bird photography safari, and the rest of your trip on walking safaris and game drives, your guide could accommodate. If your guide does not have extensive knowledge in photography but has an endless knowledge of birding in the area, he or she can bring a professional wildlife photographer along to give you tips on photography while your guide takes you to prime breeding grounds and bird sanctuaries in the area.

When you decide to use a private safari guide who specializes in your particular interests, you receive an endless amount of benefits through the personal interaction and guidance. One on one interaction with a specialized guide is by far the best way to get the most out of your vacation to Africa.

According to a recent newsletter from Volcanoes Safaris, a Uganda newspaper, New Vision, claims that the population of mountain gorillas in Virunga Massif has increased 26.3% in the past seven years. This is a spectacular feat for these endangered mountain gorillas—one that will hopefully continue to produce positive results for this remarkable species.

Famous for being the largest primate, the gorilla is often killed for the bush meat trade and trophy poaching. The gorilla’s habitat has also steadily decreased over the past years due to deforestation.

Today, you have the rare chance to witness these riveting creatures in their natural habitat on a gorilla tracking safari in Uganda and Rwanda. And I assure you, there is nothing more riveting and glorious than the sight of a 500 lb. silverback, male gorilla beating his chest with the force of ten men.

What can you expect while on a gorilla tracking safari?

Vast scenic beauty: Uganda and Rwanda are comprised of mountainous terrain, thick bamboo forests, majestic swamplands, volcanoes, lakes, and stunning national parks, which all offer a unique insight into the region’s awe-inspiring wildlife. Some places to be sure to visit include: Bwindi National Park in Uganda and Parc National des Volcans in Rwanda—perfect for gorilla tracking and photographing wildlife; Ishasha—home to the tree climbing lions; Kasenyi plains—ideal for game drives; Lake Nyinambuga—a volcano crater that filled with water ages ago; and the Kyambura Gorge—famous for exceptional chimpanzee tracking safaris.

Riveting primates: Explore the enchanting Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Parc National des Volcans in search of the elusive silverback gorilla, as well as a wide spectrum of other primate species including the black-and-white colobus monkey, red-tailed monkey, blue monkey, baboon, and others. Home to nearly half of the world’s population of gorillas, Bwindi is the only place on earth where chimpanzees and mountain gorillas live amongst each other.

During these safaris, you’ll witness gorillas interacting with each other, noisy chimps, and branch-dangling monkeys without the constraints of a controlled environment or gates. You’ll truly feel alive as your heart simultaneously pounds and melts as you stare into the eyes of these intricate creatures.

For those who want to endure more strenuous physical activity, you may want to consider full-day gorilla tracking safaris, while individuals who prefer a more relaxed vacation might opt for the half-day gorilla tracking safari. Since these safaris do require physical activity and lots of walking up the lush mountainsides of Uganda and Rwanda, it’s important to plan only a few days for gorilla tracking so that you’re not tired for the rest of your trip.

A Golden Monkey

An abundance of diverse wildlife: While on game drives and walking safaris, you’ll have the opportunity to witness nearly 350 species of bird and 80 species of mammal, including elephant, lion, buffalo, and bush duiker.

And one of the most spectacular creatures in this area is the mysterious tree climbing lion. These rare lions have been found climbing trees in Uganda and Tanzania and can often be seen resting on a tree limb, high above the ground. So don’t forget to look up while on your game drives.

Lavish accommodations: Celebrated for opulent accommodations, Uganda and Rwanda offer the discerning traveler a wide selection of sensational lodges and hotels, built with relaxation and seclusion in mind. Whether you want to stay near the city center of Uganda or retreat to vast natural surroundings, these countries have luxury accommodations to suite your specific preferences.

Some of our preferred accommodations include Volcanoes Safaris’ lodges—Virunga Safari Lodge in Rwanda and Bwindi Lodge in Uganda; the Emin Pasha Hotel—a luxurious hotel located near Uganda’s city center; the Ndali Lodge—situated on the edge of a volcano crater; and the Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge—located on the Great Rift Valley.

Adventurous activities: Although Uganda and Rwanda are famous for their exceptional gorilla tracking safaris, these areas also offer excellent game drive, hiking, climbing, and boating opportunities. With such a diverse terrain, Uganda and Rwanda are an adventurist’s paradise. These areas are also celebrated for their banana plantations and legendary tea plantations—perfect for exploring on a guided tour. And you can’t visit Uganda without hiking the Muhavura and Gahinga Volcanoes.

Would you love to take a trip to Uganda or Rwanda?

Are you ready to experience a family vacation that is completely out of the ordinary? If so, then look no further than South Africa.

For families who want to immerse themselves and their children into an experience that is truly rare and enlightening, South Africa is a place of infinite opportunities for exploration. From the exotic wildlife to the eclectic art scenes, savory cuisine to the thriving eco-systems, and unique locals to spectacular adventures, South Africa continuously beats with riveting energy.

Whether your children are seven or sixteen, there are unlimited opportunities to learn and discover a fascinating world outside of the traditional classroom setting. And no matter your age, it’s impossible not to feel a sense of self-growth and discovery.

Below are nine out-of-the-ordinary ways to experience a South African family safari:

1. View some of the ocean’s most astounding creatures as you enjoy a private flight above False Bay. Not only will you be able to see great white sharks and whales, but you’ll also have out-of-this-world photography opportunities.

2. Take a helicopter ride from Cape Town to the peninsula and embark on a private charter to go great white shark diving or view sharks from the comfort of a boat. Or, swim with the African penguins on Boulders Beach.

3. Experience a private and highly information tour on Robben Island (pictured above) where you can learn about the rich history of the island and its place in South Africa’s tyrannical time of apartheid. Here, you’ll be able to view nearly 50 years of resilience and bravery through the cell walls (Nelson Mandela’s cell being one of them) of the prison that sits atop the island.

4. Live on the edge with a private dive in the South African aquarium’s shark tank or experience the rush of paragliding off Lions Head Mountain in Cape Town.

5. Experience a unique adventure through Cape Town or the countryside of Cape Winelands via a Cape Sidecar. These fun motorbikes were preserved since World War I, when they were used as a popular form of transportation!

6. Partake in a private Lindt chocolate-making class in the beautiful De Waterkant where the Lindt chocolate studio is located. Whether you and your kids want to create chocolates in the shape of African animals, or make traditional Lindt chocolate truffles, the opportunities are endless.

Image taken from http://www.goldofafrica.com/

7. Take a private tour through the Gold of Africa Museum at nighttime when it is only lit by torches and candles or enjoy a special lesson in jewelry making at the museum’s workshop. Through artistic

displays and ancient artifacts, Africa’s history will unfold right before your eyes, guiding you through the intricate relationship Africa has with gold. Through a private museum tour, you’ll discover the traditional workings of African goldsmiths and how these past designs have inspired contemporary creations.

8. Immerse yourself in the local customs during a private African drumming or marimba and African dance lesson at the community center in Langa. Here, you’ll be able to explore Africa’s musical traditions and lend a hand in creating inspirational music with the locals. And when you participate in these private lessons, you are also contributing toward the instruments that can be purchased for the local children.

Image taken from http://www.thundercity.com/

9. Ever wonder what it would be like to be a fight jet pilot? If so, Thunder City is where you’ll make your dream come true. Known for being “the largest civilian owned collected of ex-military jets in the world,” Thunder City offers a unique insight into the history of aviation. Here, you’ll view and have the opportunity to fly in everything from an English Electric Lightning (the last four in the world!) to a BAE Buccaneer, and a Hawker Hunter to a Strikemaster, as well as a Puma Helicopter.

As you may have heard us mention several times before on our blog, we’re huge advocates of private guided safari experiences. Whether you’re visiting for an Africa safari honeymoon, 30th wedding anniversary, or a family vacation, exploring the African bush with a private safari guide gives you the flexibility of having all of your experiences focus primarily on your interests. In other words, everything is catered around your needs and personal preferences.

One of our favorite, private guide providers is Private Guided Safaris, which is a boutique provider, offering privately guided safaris in twelve African countries. Each trip is guided by Anthony, a third-generation Zimbabwean, and occasionally Rawana who was born and raised in Kenya.

Image taken from http://www.privateguidedsafaris.com/index.html

The duo recently launched their own mobile tented camp, nestled in the sprawling plains of the Gonarezhou National Park in Southeastern Zimbabwe. The camp, which remains in one location for the duration of your stay, moves throughout the year within the park, depending on where the richest concentration of wildlife lies. One of the most exciting camp sites is off the banks of the Runde River where the red Chilojo Cliffs jut high above the horizon. Just near the cliffs is a flood plain and seasonal pans that beckon wildlife to congregate.

After Ant and Rawana held their first guided trip in the camp in May, Ant ventured to Kenya to guide a 10-day safari for a new adventure travel company, Epic Quest, while Rawana worked on preparing the camp’s new menu and finding a chef.

As the safari season trailed off into winter, the nighttime and mornings were very cold, while the day unraveled into searing heat. Although the temperature fluctuations were dramatic, it was still an exciting time to be on safari and cozy up by the fire at night.

Rawana sums up her experiences in Gonarezhou National Park quite perfectly:

“It is difficult to put into words how beautiful Gonarezhou National Park is. The sandstone cliffs stand like sentinels over the Runde River, glowing sometimes pink, sometimes orange. The sun sets were spectacular, either over the giant baobabs or over the quietly flowing water in the sand river bed, always punctuated by the cries of the Egyptian Geese flying low over the sand and the Fish Eagles’ calls as they settled down for the night. It is remarkable that we are the only safari operator using such a huge expanse of wilderness that is so little known even to most bush loving Zimbabweans. Long may it last!”

In the past several months, the duo had some exceptional sightings and wildlife interactions within the park that included large tusked elephants—which are rare to see—robust hippos, curious mongoose, lion prides, and leopards.

Image of the Gonarezhou Bushcamp, taken from http://www.privateguidedsafaris.com/gonarezhu-bush-camp.html

On a recent trip Ant and Rawana guided in Gonarezhou National Park, they witnessed lions kill a warthog in the Runde riverbed during a morning game walk. During an evening drive at Malilangwe, one of their vehicles broke down nearly 50 metres from a pride of lions. Everyone quietly exited the car and began pushing it to push start the vehicle. But every time they took a step, the ground would rustle beneath their feet and catch the attention of a large lioness who was curious to see what the team was up to. By the time they got the vehicle started again, the lioness had made her way 20 metres from the group!

During this same trip, Ant, Rawana, and their camp guests ventured to Mana Pools National Park where they saw two bull elephants duke it out with their dense husks. Another elephant they witnessed sat straight up on his back legs to grab some branches from an Albida tree.

Also spotted on this trip were the honey-badger, bush pig, leopard, monkeys, squirrels, and wild dogs.

Aside from the exceptional game drives and walking safaris, Gonarezhou National Park also boasts remarkable fishing opportunities. Specifically, the tiger fish is among one of the most exhilarating fishes to catch with its gapping mouth and massive girth.

Whether it’s work, school, finances, or lifestyle choices, we almost always never have enough time to get everyone together for even one family vacation. Sometimes family vacations only happen once every five years thanks to our hectic lifestyles.

So, if it’s that time of year (or decade) again, when you want to plan a family vacation, choose a destination that will live with your entire family forever; a place where the entire family can revisit year-round in memories and spirit; a place such as Africa.

When you visit Africa with your family, you’re not only experiencing bonding time, but you’re also growing together without the constraints of personal age or time. There is no deeper bond or connection than growing together as a family.

So, ever since your children were born, if you dreamed about rewarding them with the invaluable gift of personal growth and cultural and intellectual expansion, than Africa is calling you.

Here are a few reasons why Africa is the ultimate family getaway:

Cultural and Intellectual Stimulation: Whether you’re on safari, conversing with a local, or enjoying an African sunset with new found travel friends, there is constant intellectual and cultural stimulation that occurs. And this form of stimulation isn’t something you can find in a classroom or book. It’s a powerful experience that occurs through interaction with individuals from unexplored cultures and with those who see the world differently based on their lifestyle, customs, and geographic location.

So, whether you’re interacting with local school children, visiting a World Heritage Site, observing local artisans, tasting new flavors, or conversing with your safari guide, your mind opens up to new possibilities that can be explored as a family and individually for years to come.

Awareness of Nature: Whether you live in an urban region or a rural town, a big city or commerce-bustling town is most likely nearby. Experiencing pure natural surroundings can be extremely difficult to come by, but a trip to Africa enables you and your family to immerse yourselves in some of the purest wildernesses of the world.

And one of the best ways to experience the many wildernesses of Africa as a family is with a private safari guide. Because private guides typically have a lot more experience and are at the top of the industry, your entire family can experience a highly adventurous and exciting safari. They work hand in hand with resident or lodge guides so you experience not one, but two personal safari guides. A pure luxury while on safari.

Physical Stimulation: Synonymous with rich visual pleasures, Africa is one of the world’s most highly-photographed and filmed regions of the world. With its vast plains, exotic wildlife, melting sunsets, cheerful locals, and stunning natural surroundings, it’s no wonder Africa is viewed as one of the most beautiful continents. But what many people may not realize is that Africa touches all of the five senses. From the rich smell of the earth to the sounds of tranquility, and the aesthetic beauty of unspoiled land to the taste of new flavors, everything about Africa stimulates your senses in entirely new ways that can be explored long after you return home.

And some of the most beautiful stimulations are the acoustic ones. From whistling birds to chirping crickets, African drums to locals singing, laughter to crackling fires, and distant lion roars to trumpeting elephants, the sounds of Africa emit an energy that is nearly palpable.

With that said, tents are probably the polar opposite of what comes to mind when you think of a luxurious African honeymoon or family vacation. But this mindset is, in fact, inaccurate.

Associating all camps and mobile safaris in Africa by these rugged stereotypes is a false assumption. In fact, there are many camps and mobile camps found throughout each country in Africa that are high-end, extremely comfortable, and equipped with all necessary amenities and highly attentive staff. Although mobile camps are a little more rustic and adventurous than non-mobile camps (mobile camps can be moved, non-mobile camps remain in one location and do not ever move, unless they are semi-mobile), there are many that offer the same luxurious features and amenities.

Below are descriptions and benefits of mobile camps and non-mobile camps to give you a better understanding of what a camp is and what it’s not:

Mobile Camps:

Depending on your personal tastes and preferences, you may choose to experience a four-day mobile safari, where your tent will be moved and set up for you each day as you venture to new locations.

Wilderness Safaris is one of our favorite mobile safari providers. They provide a variety of mobile safaris, which they call Adventurer Explorations. Each of their Adventurer Explorations uses lush duvets, cotton sheets, and GI stretchers for bedding, and is equipped with en-suite bathroom amenities including a toilet, bucket shower, and a hand wash basin, so that each guest’s room is transformed into a luxurious suite.

A mobile safari is perfect for you if:

You crave the old-fashioned, 19th-century safari feel. Created using eclectic tin finishes, a canvas covering, and lantern illumination, Wilderness Safaris’ mobile camps are direct reflections of safari camps utilized by past celebrities such as Theodore Roosevelt and David Livingstone.

You want to experience a more rustic safari adventure and discover as much as you can while feeling relaxed and comfortable—all without having to do the hard work associated with camping such as making food, pitching your tent, carrying your tent, cleaning, or anything else laborious. Your tents are taken down for you and are set up at the next location before you even arrive.

You desire highly personalized safari tours where you explore the most secluded areas of Africa.

Non-Mobile Camps:

Tents used in non-mobile camps are often constructed using more durable materials such as wood or dried clay. Many do, however, incorporate canvas and lighter materials into the design of the tent so that the sights, sounds, and scents of nature can permeate through the tents. Some camps also do not refer to their accommodations as tents; many prefer to call them chalets, bandas, or bungalows.

Non-mobile camps are perfect for you if:

You want to have a more intimate and private experience. Camps are often much smaller and more intimate than hotels. Although hotels are wonderful to stay at in cities and outside of the bush—such as Cape Town and the Garden Route—they are not ideal for the bush. Because camps are often much smaller than hotels, personal staff is always attentive to your every need, catering to even the smallest of details. The intimacy of the camps also means no children running around, no large groups taking up space in the dining room or on safari, and no wait on anything.

You wish to seamlessly connect with nature and your immediate surroundings. As camps are designed to incorporate natural elements within their décor, exposure to the breeze, wildlife, and towering fynbos of the bush is effortless. Each and every day, you’ll feel your cares and thoughts of responsibility melt away as you find peace in the surrounding sounds, sights, and aromas of the bush.

You want to feel secluded while still relishing in luxurious amenities such as underground plunge pools, bomas, and fireplaces. As for meals, dining arrangements often differ at various camps—some are equipped with a main dining tent, others offer lantern-lit outdoor seating, while others offer both.

You want to visit a place that rewards your family with cultural enlightenment, historical insight, and precious family bonding time.

As a culturally and historically enriched region, Cape Town and its surrounding areas are prime destinations for those looking to broaden their horizons of worldly experiences and knowledge. Although the most popular tours and historic landmarks include Table Mountain, Cape of Good Hope, Kirstenbosch Gardens, and Dies Bo Kaap, every family’s itinerary differs depending on their personal preferences and needs. No two itineraries are alike.

Below is a 7-day sample itinerary that is designed to give you a better idea for what you and your family could expect on an African family vacation to the Cape Town region:

Day 1: The Mother City Tour: This tour celebrates the best of what Cape Town has to offer. After your first, peaceful night in Cape Town’s luxurious Mount Nelson Hotel, you will awake to a nourishing, traditional English breakfast in one of the hotel’s fine dining areas. After your meal, you will embark on a journey through historic Cape Town.

First, you will enjoy a tour up Table Mountain via rotating cable car, and then a tour of The Castle of Good Hope. Continuing on your exploration, you’ll visit gardens, the Green Point Light House, The Cape Town Stadium, V & A Waterfront, Die Bo Kaap, District Six, and the Kirstenbosch Gardens. Once you arrive at the Gardens, you will enjoy a delightful lunch, where you can reminisce about the morning’s adventures.

Day 2: The Peninsula Tour: After a rejuvenating last night at the Mount Nelson Hotel, you will embark on your next journey to Hout Bay. Here, you will take a boat to the beautiful Seal Island where you can relax and enjoy the African ocean breeze. After a day in the sun, you will head over to your next accommodation, The Last Word Long Beach Guest House.

Once you have freshened up at the hotel, you’ll be escorted to Boulders Beach where you will visit an African penguin colony and observe the penguins in their natural environment. Cape of Good Hope will be your final destination for the day.

Day 3: Wine Tastings and Butterfly Sightings: Today, you will relish in some of the Cape’s most exceptional wines when you visit Ernie Els’ wine estate for delightful wine tastings and a cellar tour. And depending on your preference of wine (red or white), you will be escorted to another wine estate where you will enjoy additional wine tastings.

For lunch, you will be brought to the award-winning Overture restaurant where you will delight in the eclectic variety of Chef Bertus Basson and Craig Cormack’s contemporary, Mediterranean, and South African culinary fusions. And don’t forget to follow the Chefs’ wine pairing suggestions!

After a spectacular lunch, you’ll visit the Butterfly World, where you and the whole family can witness a variety of butterflies, birds, reptiles, and peculiar insects.

Day 4: Taking the Scenic Route: Today, you will begin your journey from the Long Beach Guest House to the renowned Birkenhead Villa in Hermanus. During your trip, you’ll stop at various points of interest along the way as you soak in your picturesque surroundings. Whether you want to enjoy a picnic on the way, visit the penguins at Stony Point, or browse some local shops, your trip to Hermanus will, no doubt, be a memorable one.

Once you arrive at the seaside Birkenhead House, you’ll be escorted to your villa where you can lounge by the pool or sit on your private balcony as you look for whales in Walker Bay.

Day 5: The Possibilities Are Endless: Whether your family is comprised of walkers and hikers, beach lovers, ocean enthusiasts, horse lovers, or a mix of all four, Hermanus has it all. Choose from a whale watching cruise, a hike through Hermanus’ Fernkloof Nature Reserve, a relaxing day on world-renowned Grotto Beach, a Dyer Island cruise, deep sea fishing, horseback riding on the beach, or a rejuvenating day in the spa.
In the morning, experience traditional hot bucket water showers, and get ready for the exciting day ahead in your personal en-suite facilities. As you take your first step outside your walk-in tent, you’ll be delighted at the sight of elephants sipping from the Zambezi River, and herons sitting peacefully in the cast of the rising morning sun.

On your second day in Zimbabwe, you will partake in the journey of lifetime through the heart of the Mana Pools on Wilderness-Safaris’ 3-day Mana Canoe Trail. During your first day aboard your two person canoe, you’ll see hippos, elephants, crocodiles, and other shore dwelling animals and birds at an amazingly close proximity.

Each day, you will experience a full day of canoeing safaris, and walking safaris through the lush wilderness of the Mana Pools, and experience a completely new and stimulating side to nature you’ve never seen before.

At night, you will stay in full-serviced dome tented camps and awake to another day of exciting activities and magnificent sights.

Day 5: “Hiding” in the Bush

After an exciting Mana Canoe Trail experience, you will take an aircraft to your next destination, Hwange National Park. Upon your arrival to the Hwange Airstrip, you will be greeted by a guide from The Hide, a lodge located in one of Hwange’s most wildlife-rich locations. You will then take an hour and a half game drive through the Park, where you will then reach The Hide.

The Hide provides guests with furnished tents—which are built for luxury, not mobility—that exude the essence of the area’s natural surroundings. Each tent provides guests with their own en-suite bathroom for convenience and privacy.

During your stay at The Hide, you’ll partake in an assortment of fantastic safaris including night drives, day drives, and walking safaris in the bush. When you are not on a safari tour, but still feel the urge to get up-close to the wildlife of Zimbabwe, visit one of The Hide’s two concealed “hides” located on either side of The Hide’s waterhole. Here, you can see elephants and other large game at a remarkably close proximity with the security of the hide.

At the end of your stay at The Hide, you will clearly understand why The Hide has coined the phrase: “You’ll arrive as a stranger and leave as a friend.”

Day 9: The Rumbling Falls

Today, you will journey to one of the world’s seven natural wonders where you will experience an explosive energy you’ve never felt before. This riveting wonder is none other than Victoria Falls.

But, before you can arrive at Victoria Falls, you must take two-hour road transfer with a Hills of Africa guide to your next accommodations, the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge.

Located on an exclusive, natural plateau overlooking The Zambezi River, the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge offers a panoramic view of an on-site waterhole, sprawling grasslands, and lush treetops. During your stay, you’ll have the ability to sharpen your photography skills as you witness residential wildlife flock to the waterhole for a morning drink.

As night falls, watch as the sun melts behind the horizon while enjoying a five-star dining experience at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge’s relaxing outdoor dining area.

Day 10: The Grand Finale

Your adventure in Africa is by no means over yet! Today, you will experience a once-in-a-lifetime, private elephant back safari at The Elephant Wallow. After your personal guide takes you through the expansive and wildlife-rich landscape of The Zambezi River area, you’ll embark on your next journey, the Tour of the Falls. Here, you’ll witness Victoria Falls up-close and immediately understand why it is categorized as one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

After your Tour of the Falls, you will embark on your next adventure—a favorite among travelers to the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge—where you will walk with the lions.

On this activity, you will visit with lion cubs at an ongoing research project, which is a captive breeding program to safeguard the genetic diversity of Africa’s greatest carnivore. The adult lions have been rescued from all parts of the world and were never introduced to the wild. They are treated and introduced to their new dwelling and once established, the adult lions are bred. Then, the cubs are reared and introduced to the wild, and will one day be fully released. Part of the re-introduction is walking in the bush, on a daily basis. On this activity you will join a professional guide in the national park, while he walks with his cubs. A truly exciting and rewarding experience to take part in!

The day isn’t over yet.

As the evening approaches, you will experience a traditional African nighttime experience with food, music, and plenty of dancing.

Day 11: The Journey Will Continue Once Again

You will arrive home and eagerly book your trip to Africa for next year!
