Botswana has something for nearly every traveler. From newlyweds on a honeymoon safari to family reunion safaris, solo travelers to couples’ retreats, and everything in between, Botswana is the prime destination for your trip of a lifetime.

With more than 40% of its land protected again poaching and natural resource deprivation practices, Botswana is bustling with a wealth of wildlife and exclusive game reserves. In fact, many of the private game reserves, which make up 17% of protected land, are so exclusive that they only permit access to visitors staying on those reserves.

If you’re looking to plan the ultimate Botswana safari vacation, choose from the very best game reserves and parks in Botswana:

Top Game Reserves and Parks:

Linyanti and Selinda concessions: Known primarily for its abundance of elephants, the Linyanti and Selinda concessions attract thousands of elephants during Botswana’s dry season (months between May and November). Some of the top safari tours to partake in while visiting these concessions are mokoro (canoe) safaris, night drives, and boat safaris.

During night drives, you can witness a wealth of nocturnal creatures come out of hiding including the bush baby, wild cats, hyenas, lions, owls, and leopards.

Okavango Delta: Comprised of secluded islands, sprawling savannah, wildlife-abundant rivers, and vast floodplains and lagoons, Okavango Delta is a wildlife-lover’s dream. Because the Okavango Delta is strewn with intricate rivers and waterways, a canoe (mokoro) safari is the region’s most celebrated activity. Although power boat tours are also an option, a mokoro safari is more relaxing and allows you to get much closer to the water and water’s edge. Without the sound of an engine, you have the ability to listen to the orchestra of nature as birds sing and skim the water, frogs chirp, and a light breeze blows.

The Okavango Delta is also considered one of the best places in the world to witness a variety of bird species. From Pel’s fishing owls to African fish eagles, kingfishers to slaty egrets, wattled cranes to African pygmy geese, and carmine bee-eaters to blacksmith plovers, there is no shortage of birds in the Okavango Delta.

Moremi Game Reserve: Arguably Botswana’s most beautiful reserve, the Moremi Game Reserve is comprised of more varying eco-systems than the Okavango Delta area. With over 1,160 square miles of dense forests, floodplains, islands, and swamps, this game reserve attracts an abundance of diverse creatures including antelope, waterbuck, red lechwe, ostrich, elephant, zebra, buffalo, leopard, spotted hyena, various bird species, and much more. You might even spot the elusive dung beetle while visiting Moremi.

Chobe National Park: Spanning roughly 4,250 square miles, the Chobe National Park is one of the best places in Botswana to partake in a power boat tour. Watch as large herds of elephants cross through the water with their baby’s playfully running side by side with their mothers.

For bird lovers, the time between September and October is an exceptional time to visit the Chobe National Park as thousands of carmine bee-eater colonies begin to breed.

When to travel to Botswana:

Although Botswana provides exceptional game viewing year-round, the best time of year to visit is usually during the dry season in months between May and November. Some areas do, however, lose some of their animals to migration patterns during the months outside of the dry season. Specifically, the Linyanti and Selinda concessions lose much of their elephant and zebra population due to natural migration patterns.

Post by Ken Hermer, Journey in Style

On the morning of Saturday March 20th, guides and staff alike were treated to an incredible and – for Kenya – a very rare wildlife spectacle, when a pack of 30-35 wild dogs crashed through the woodland surrounding the lodge hunting a herd of impala.

Several of the dogs, in pursuit of a pregnant female, followed her through the lodge’s electric fence eventually stopping just short at a group of bewildered lodge staff going about their early morning chores. The dogs made a retreat leaving the impala, which died shortly afterwards from wounds inflicted in the chase. One dog however, refused to brave the electric fence for a second time and remained inside until the power was switched off.

In total 3-4 impala were taken and the dogs remained in the vicinity of the lodge waterhole for the next couple of days before moving on. Most of the dogs looked lean but in good condition, and is a good indicator that Kenya’s wild dog population is coming back from near extinction through epidemics of canine distemper and rabies through the 80’s and 90’s.

My clients, the Sirois family, just returned from their African safari vacation to South Africa, where they traveled to Cape Town, the Garden Route and went on safari.  Here’s what they had to say:

The Sirois family having a Cape Malay cooking lesson

The Sirois family having a Cape Malay cooking lesson

Thanks to Hills of Africa we had a very unique and personalized experience on our visit to South Africa. We would never have been able to find all the wonderful places we visited without their invaluable advice. We even learned to cook a traditional Cape Malay meal in a home in the Bo Kaap District of Cape Town! Tour books don’t come close to what they did.
We had a fairly rigid time line and lots of things we wanted to do. They put together a fabulous itinerary that not only allowed us to fit in all the things we wanted (touring, shopping, wineries, safari, etc…) but also gave us some flexibility to add things along the way. They booked us with hotels, game reserves and tour guides that they KNEW would be top notch. Hills of Africa met all our expectations and more. We can’t wait to go back.

Does your heart pound with envy at the thought of a racecar speeding across a racetrack at 250 mph? Or a skydiver freefalling from thousands of feet above the ground? If so, you may find that shark diving in Gansbaai, Western Cape, South Africa is the perfect solution to satisfy your deep-rooted hunger for adrenaline.

The Great White Shark

With strict preservation laws on great white sharks, Gansbaai is arguably the world’s best place to observe these exceptional creatures in their natural feeding grounds. One of the most popular places to observe the great white shark in Gansbaai is in the channel between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock—justifiably referred to as shark alley.

Sharks near Dyer IslandFor the more adventurous, you can observe these spectacular creatures up-close from the safety of a specially designed shark diving cage. If you’re on the more conservative side—like myself—you can witness sharks feed from the comfort of the boat. In addition to viewing a variety of shark species, you can see Cape fur seals, whales, and penguins.

Great White Sharks near Dyer Island

In Gansbaai there are a variety of shark dive safari providers and excursions to choose from—some including cages, photography opportunities, manta rays, hammerheads, tiger sharks, and more. Although each shark dive safari provider offers varying itineraries, many supply delicious breakfasts and lunches during your full day of shark viewing and diving.  One of the companies we recommend is Marine Dynamic Tours, which is Fair Trade Certified by the Fair Trade in Tourism company in South Africa.

Below are some things you can see and do in the deep waters surrounding Gansbaai:

Shark Diving Tours in Gansbaai

• Observe a large variety of sharks as you float safely behind the iron bars of a shark cage. Depending on the type of shark dive safari you choose, you can see hammerheads, tiger sharks (the most dangerous shark in the world), great whites, and bull sharks in their natural habitats.
• View shark feedings from the comfort of a boat. Because great whites feed at the surface, it’s not necessary to cage dive if you want to see these magnificent animals. Although it is a completely different experience, you will still be able to see great whites as they come to the surface for food.
• Scuba dive with one of the ocean’s largest and most gentle creatures, the whale shark, or through a handful of wrecks and reefs.
• Photograph enormous manta rays, moray eels, dolphins, colorful reef fish, turtles, seals and wreck sharks.

Seals at Dyer Island

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come face-to-face with one of the world’s most dangerous predators is indescribable and an activity that shouldn’t be missed—even if you are viewing the sharks from the boat! If you’re interested in participating in a shark diving excursion, the best time to enjoy one is from June to September, although many providers do offer shark dive safaris year-round.

Learn more about shark diving safaris today by contacting us at 1.800.940.9344. Our team specializes in creating completely customized itineraries for travelers going on an African family safari or honeymoon safari. Isn’t it time you experienced the African safari trip of a lifetime?

We’d love to hear your feedback on a shark diving safari in our comments section. Let us know if you would ever be up for cage diving.

Img110456wtmkComing in as Animal Planet’s sixth ugliest animal in the world, the poor little warthog has made an unfortunate name for itself. With long, thin legs, a hairy back and head, two sets of tusks (four individual tusks all together), and a wart covered head, it’s no wonder this unpopular creature is getting picked on. But, to the contrary, if you observe the warthog in its entire splendor, you may find them to be quite cute!

Warthog

As relatives of the pig, warthogs are delightful to watch in the wild as they prance side by side along the moist and arid African savannah, nibbling on grass, plants, and roots. The average weight of the warthog is 120 – 250 lbs., with an average life span of 15 years, and an estimated height of 30 in.

Weird Warthog Facts:

• The warts on the sides of the warthog’s head are not actually warts. Rather, they are thick pads that help protect the warthog from sharp tusk wounds from other warthogs during male-on-male fighting.

• The warthog lives in groups called sounders, which are usually comprised of up to a dozen individuals.

Warthog_by_Dave_Estment

• Baby warthogs are born in burrows beneath the ground, where they stay for 6 – 7 weeks after birth. On average, one female warthog will have anywhere from 2 – 5 babies in one birthing. Warthog offspring will stay with their mother for up to two years before leaving.

• When a lion, leopard, or any other predator charges after a warthog, the warthog will scurry as fast as it can—sometimes reaching speeds of up to 30 miles per hour—to the nearest burrow and go down the burrow backside first in order to protect itself with its husks if the predator gets too close.

• The warthog can go without water for months at a time if need be.

• Warthogs can be—well, pigs. Marking their territory with saliva and urine, warthogs aren’t the cleanliest of creatures. In addition to these icky habits, warthogs also love to roll around in mud to keep cool and scrape off parasites.

African Fish Eagle by Dave EstmentAs a close relative to the North American bald eagle, the African fish eagle is one of South Africa’s most stunning creatures to observe on a South African birding safari. Characterized by black, brown, and white plumage, the African fish eagle is nearly identical in appearance to its endangered North American relative.

Found in tall trees bordering large rivers, lakes, lagoons, estuaries, and floodplains, this bird is rarely found in arid climates such as the south-western regions of Africa. Living near large bodies of water, the African fish eagle never strays too far from its food source—it can always be seen near some body of water.

Their diet mainly includes fish that can reach up to roughly 6 ½ lbs, but are usually only 2 – 3 lbs. in weight. Fish that weigh more than 3 lbs. are often not carried in the air, but rather, brought to shore by land. The most frequently eaten species is the lungfish and the catfish. In addition to eating live fish, African fish eagles have also been known the be scavengers—eating already dead fish.

Fisheagle by Dave Estment

Fascinating African fish eagle facts:

• Categorized as kleptoparasites the African fish eagle has been known to steal prey from other bird species, as well as steal eggs and young from other water birds’ nests. They have also been spotted digesting flamingos and other water birds, as well as baby crocodiles and carrion. (The below photos by Dave show a series of photos of a fish eagle attempting to steal a fish from two saddle-billed storks in the Okavango Delta.)

Saddle-billeds chasing the African Fish EagleNo luck for the African Fish Eagle

• Famous for their powerful calls, the sound the African fish eagle makes has frequently been referred to as the voice of Africa. There are two distinct calls the African fish eagle makes—one while in the nest and the other in flight. The nest call is characterized as a “quock” sound.

• African fish eagles catch their prey slightly above the water with the sharp talons on their feet, but have also been known to submerge themselves to catch their prey.

• According to BirdLife International’s official Red List Authority for birds for IUCN, the African fish eagle population is at a “least concern” status. “The population size is very large, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion.” With only a 30% decrease in population over the past ten years, the population is still at roughly 300,000 individuals.

• Made up of large sticks, the African fish eagle’s nest can be found on cliff ledges and also in large trees.

Fish eagles are one of my favorite African birds.  Tell me what yours is?

Some of the world’s most spectacular art forms were born in Africa’s culturally diverse countries. One such art form, famous for its fascinating ability to turn recyclable materials into works of art, has been spotlighted in Cape Town, South Africa for many years. These unique creations are known as wire art.

The origins of wire art are still slightly ambiguous, but it is believed that these unique art forms originated in South Africa’s rural Northern Kwazulu-Natal. Young herd boys were the first to introduce these works of art. Designing wire creations from any recycled materials they could find, these boys produced some of the most magnificent, functioning appliances—they even built cars! Their inspirational wire creations encouraged other locals to participate in this highly marketable art form.

Today, one of South Africa’s most highly-acclaimed shopping hubs to purchase these exquisite works of art is none other than Streetwires. This community project comprised of creators of modern African wire and bead craft, is an amazing place to experience Cape Town culture and witness the fusion of traditional African craft skills and First World resources. Streetwires is a Proudly South African project that provides formerly unemployed citizens with training and materials to foster their natural born gifts of creating works of art. When you buy from Streetwires, you are contributing to a sustainable society and economy in Cape Town, because the money goes back into the local community.

Wire artworks are African inspired sculptures created from wire, beads, tin cans, and other recycled materials. These functioning, hand-crafted pieces are some of the most fascinating art forms recognized in South Africa.

Here are a few things you can purchase while visiting Streetwires in Cape Town, South Africa:
