If you’ve been thinking about planning an African family safari, but are still on the fence, maybe hearing from a family who recently visited Africa might provide with you a better idea for if a trip to Africa is right for your family.

Below, our recent clients from New Orleans, the Todd family, share their amazing experiences in Africa:

The Todd Family: Trey, Beth, Amie, and Alex

“Any chance to re-live some of the life altering experiences that my family and I had on our Hills of Africa safari is most welcomed. Nothing can beat watching the African sunrise over the Okavango Delta with loved ones or feeling the exhilaration of a charging elephant testing the abilities of our dedicated guide as we back up quickly down the road! Nothing compares to the playful antics of leopard cubs wrestling in the tall savanna grass! When will we ever get another chance to view the majesty of a pride of lions against a backdrop of acacia and baobab trees or a family of cheetahs lounging on a termite mound before an evening of hunting impala.

Image taken by the Todd Family

The magic of Africa now runs through me as surely as if I were a child of the Kalahari leaving my footprints next to the spoor of the hyaena. This same magic that rekindled the passions of my daughters and wife for nature and the great outdoors. Everyone needs to share the experiences of a trip like this with their loved ones. It was unforgettable, spiritually uplifting, and truly just fodder for the soul. Throw in a couple of World Cup soccer games and I believe one has found the formula for the perfect holiday!

Many thanks to the Hills of Africa people who made this trip a reality for my family. Thanks to the staff of the Chitabe, Tubi Tree and Duma Tau camps for the meals, the dancing and entertainment, and the camaraderie. Thanks to the extremely knowledgeable guides for teaching us the species and the environmental impact of everything we do. Lastly, thank you Sandy for helping us get through a very trying time when we thought all the preparation would be for naught after we missed our flight. I can’t wait to schedule our next trip to Cape Town or Kruger or to recommend your company to friends.”

Below is Adrenaline Rush: Top 10 Adventure Safari Tours Part II:

6. White water rafting at Victoria Falls: Known for its 300-foot cliff, lush rainforests, mysterious creatures, and unspoiled wilderness, Victoria Falls is arguably the greatest place to visit while on an African safari tour. The locals refer to Victoria Falls as Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning the smoke that thunders.

Whether on an African family safari, honeymoon safari, or any safari in between, white water rafting at Victoria Falls is an exciting group adventure. Only while white water rafting can you experience the magnificent size and sheer power of Victoria Falls.

Image from Greystoke Mahale website

7. Chimpanzee Trekking Uganda: One of the best places to

experience chimp trekking is at Greystoke Mahale in Tanzania. As you enjoy a delightful walk through the lush forest behind Greystoke, a surprising mystery awaits you on the soft green slopes of the Mahale Mountains. With nearly 1,000 chimps living in the surrounding Gombe National Park, you’ll see a variety of chimp families playing, foraging, and socializing.

After just a few minutes with these magnificent creatures, you’ll begin to see unique characteristics that separate each chimp from the next. You’ll also immediately notice distinct correlations between the behavior of these chimps and that of humans.

In addition to the impressive chimps, you’ll also encounter eight other species of primates, leopard, buchbuck, bushpigs, and a wide spectrum of exotic bird and insect species, while on your tropical forest hike.

Crocodile pens at Camp Mongu

8. Crocodile Farm Tours: The mere sight of a 16 ft. croc in the distance is a heart-pounding observation, but getting up close to one on a crocodile farm tour is sure to send your adrenaline spiking. With a mouth riddled with razor sharp teeth and a prehistoric appearance, the crocodile is one of the most fascinating creatures to witness in nature.

On a crocodile farm tour, you’ll have a personal guide take you through the farm, introducing you to the ferocious inhabitants. Here, you can ask questions about the crocs and learn interesting and bizarre facts about their behavior. Many crocodile farms also allow visitors to witness croc feedings.

Photo of Tigerfish from Fisheastafrica.com

9. Fishing Tours: Whether you’re interested in big game

saltwater fishing or freshwater fishing, African fishing tours are always filled with excitement and adventure.

For those interested in freshwater fishing, you have the opportunity to observe large land game and other lake dwelling creatures such as a wide variety of birds, hippos, and crocodiles as you enjoy an exciting day of fishing. One of the most popular and aggressive freshwater fish is the tigerfish, which can weigh in anywhere from 10 – 25 lbs. Some of the best places for freshwater fishing include Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park, and Zimbabwe’s Zambezi River and Mana Pools National Park.

Deep sea fishing, on the other hand, typically consists of larger and stronger fish depending on the time of year you choose to go out, and the fishing line also reaches depths of over 1,000 ft. Some of the best African coastlines to go deep sea fishing off of are Kenya, Tanzania, and the Mozambique Channel. Typically, October through March yield the most catch, which often consist of a variety of marlin species, wahoo, kingfish, yellowfin tuna, and swordfish. But often, sailfish are caught the most as they are found in the area year round.

10. Night Game Drives: During night drives you get the chance to observe nocturnal animals, and view the different behavior patterns of animals you spot during the day. Although photography doesn’t turn out as well as it does on day game drives, night game drives offer a completely new experience as predators search for their prey in the dark. Hearing a hippo grunting in the dark or a lion growl at its prey is completely different when you’re in the dark.

The wonderful thing about a trip to Africa is the combination of relaxation and adventure visitors to Africa experience. Whether you want to spend your African vacation relaxing on a beach or trekking through the wilderness, Africa has it all.

For the highly adventurous type, below are Africa’s top 10 adventure safari tours:

1. Walking with the lions: On this activity, you will visit with lion cubs at an ongoing research project, which is a captive breeding program to safeguard the genetic diversity of Africa’s greatest carnivore. On this activity you will join a professional guide in the national park, while he walks with his cubs. A truly exciting and rewarding experience to take part in!

2. Shark Diving: Shark diving in Gansbaai, Western Cape, South Africa is the perfect solution to satisfy your deep-rooted hunger for adrenaline. In Gansbaai there are a variety of shark dive safari providers and excursions to choose from—some including cages, photography opportunities, manta rays, hammerheads, tiger sharks, great whites, bull sharks, and more.

Depending on the type of shark safari you choose, you can observe a large variety of sharks as you float safely behind the iron bars of a shark cage, view shark feedings from the comfort of a boat, or scuba dive with one of the ocean’s largest and most gentle creatures, the whale shark. Or, scuba dive through a handful of wrecks and reefs to photograph enormous manta rays, moray eels, dolphins, colorful reef fish, turtles, seals and wreck sharks.

3. Hot air balloon: View the world from a birds-eye-view and take flight above the mountains, over the treetops, and through the light winds of Africa on a hot air balloon safari. If you’re looking for some exceptional photography opportunities, this is the safari for you.

One of our favorite hot air balloon rides is in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Here, as the hot air balloon rises at dawn, you’ll be able to see the perfect curves of the earth and the glistening hues of the sun reflect on the Park’s lush wilderness. During your smooth flight, expect to see rolling hills, quaint countryside, orchards, mountain tops, thick forests, and the famous Blyde River Canyon.

If you’re looking for a completely exclusive experience, most lodges offer extremely detailed hot air balloon itineraries that cater to your every wish. Whether you want to enjoy a bottle of champagne above the treetops with your loved one, or have a professional photographer accompany you and your family in the sky, your requests will be fulfilled.

Image from africanhorse.com

4. Horseback safari: Feel the exhilaration as you encounter a lion stalking its prey, or trot next to a baby elephant and its mother. From the very beginning of a horseback safari to the very end, you’ll come face-to-face with some of the world’s most photographed creatures and experience what it’s like to run with the herd.

A horseback safari allows you to immerse yourself in the mountainous terrain of some of Africa’s most amazing countryside. Depending on which horseback safari you choose and which lodge you stay at, you can travel through cascading waterfalls, old mining towns, sunken valleys, bushveld, rolling terrain, sprawling countryside, and mountainous regions, while viewing nature from horseback.

Image from botswanaluxurysafari.com

5. Elephant back safari: Several lodges throughout southern Africa offer elephant back riding—one of the most exciting and unique experiences to be had in Africa. As you sit behind an experienced guide, you’ll feel the sheer power of the elephant as it walks slowly across the earth.

On elephant back, you’ll pass through the bush and encounter some exciting game viewing opportunities from a unique perspective. Frequently spotted animals on an elephant back safari include lion, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and other elephants. Once your journey is at its end, you’ll be able to feed the elephants and learn about their behavior, eating habits, and physical characteristics.

One of the best places to experience an elephant back safari is Kruger National Park.

Kruger National Park and its adjacent private reserves in South Africa are famous for their high concentration of wild game, stunning scenery, and rich cultural heritage. In addition to an exceptional landscape, the area is also known for having some of the best-known and exclusive safari lodges in the world, including places like Singita, Londolozi, Tintswalo, and Mala Mala.

With a wide spectrum of varying terrain and eco-systems throughout Kruger National Park, the various lodges in this region offer activities that take you through the Parks’ intricate wildernesses and give you a fresh point-of-view on the world—a point-of-view that is impossible to achieve on a vehicle safari.

Whether you want to view the world from a bird’s perspective or from a mammal’s perspective, Kruger National Park is the perfect place to test your sense of vision, hearing, touch, and adventure. Although vehicle safaris are a must in Kruger National Park, you may find other activities, that offer the slightest variation in perspective, can awaken the senses in a whole new way.

View the world from . . .

A bird’s point-of-view: Unless you’re on a mountain top or soaring above ground, you’ll never get to see the distinct differences between neighboring terrains, and view the world from a vertical perspective. But what if there were a way you could take flight above the mountains, over the treetops, and through the light winds of South Africa? It’s possible on a hot air balloon safari through Kruger National Park.

A hot air balloon safari is a one-of-a-kind experience that takes you high above the ground and shows you the earth as only the birds can see. If you’re looking for some exceptional photography opportunities, this is the safari for you.
As the hot air balloon rises at dawn, you’ll be able to see the perfect curves of the earth and the glistening hues of the sun reflect on the Park’s lush wilderness.

A mammal’s point-of-view: You cannot get any closer to nature than riding on the back of an animal as it runs with a herd of zebra or gallops with a group of antelope. A horseback safari brings you right in the middle of the action.
Feel the exhilaration as you encounter a lion stalking its prey, or trot next to a baby elephant and its mother. From the very beginning of this safari to the very end, you’ll come face-to-face with some of the world’s most photographed creatures and experience what it’s like to run with the herd.

A horseback safari allows you to immerse yourself in the mountainous terrain of some of South Africa’s most amazing countryside, and experience the land as it was from the very beginning. Depending on which horseback safari you choose and which lodge you stay at, you can travel through cascading waterfalls, old mining towns, sunken valleys, bushveld, and rolling terrain, while viewing nature from horseback.

The world’s largest land animal’s point-of-view: Several lodges within the Kruger National Park offer elephant back riding—one of the most exciting and unique experiences to be had in all of Africa. As you sit behind an experienced guide, you’ll feel the sheer power of the elephant as it walks slowly across the earth.

Before your elephant back experience, you’ll be educated briefly on elephant behavior and safety regulations.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Africa? Is it a safari tour or perhaps big-game-viewing? If so, it’s time to discover the endless possibilities that Africa really has to offer. Although game drive, canoe, and walking safari tours are extraordinary and life-altering, Africa provides travelers with much more than the traditional safari tour.

One place in particular has positioned itself as a well-rounded activity hub for travelers looking for more than the traditional safari excursion. This place is Mpumalanga, South Africa, one of Africa’s most diverse and exciting places to enjoy a wealth of activities, rich historical heritage, tribal legends, and an abundance of exotic animals, lush flora and scenery.

Known for its deep valleys, waterfalls, rivers, and thick forests, Mpumalanga is teeming with wildlife and birdlife and is a haven for adventure enthusiasts, bird lovers, and curious travelers alike. On the western side of this glorious region lies the Kruger National Park—one of Africa’s most highly-acclaimed destinations for the seasoned traveler. When you’re looking to go on a game drive or walking safari, Kruger National Park is an absolute must. In addition, Mpumalanga is known for its 1870s legendary gold rush era, which has made it one of the most culturally and historically enriched areas in all of Africa.

With a deep-rooted history, high concentration of wildlife, and a variety of eco-systems, Mpumalanga has positioned itself as a premier destination for those looking for more than the traditional safari tour. Some of the region’s most popular activities include hot air ballooning, bungee jumping, paragliding, golfing, fishing, paintball shooting, river rafting, rock climbing, rock sliding, canoeing, caving, hang gliding, horseback riding, mountain biking, and mountain climbing. With so many to choose from it can be difficult deciding which activity is perfect for you.

Because there is such a wide spectrum of activities to choose from its impossible to spotlight them all, this is whyHills of Africa Travel has put a few highlights of some of Mpumalanga’s most popular activities below:

Sourin’: Home to the Blyde River Canyon, which has cliffs 2,296 ft. high, strong winds, and a high cloud base, Mpumalanga has positioned itself as the region’s leader in hang gliding and paragliding and has even hosted several of the nation’s paragliding championships. The province’s windy weather also makes it a premier spot to enjoy hot air ballooning, micro lighting, parachuting, and other flying activities.

Pedal through paradise: A paradise for biking enthusiasts, Mpumalanga’s mountainous town, Sabie, boasts biking trails for both the basic biker and for the advanced biker. The area is so popular for biking that the local biking association holds the South African National Mountain Biking Championships there every September. For those who tire easily from pedaling, Mpumalanga offers off-road 4X4 excursions through the various and highly diverse terrain of the region.

Uncover ancient relics: Travel back in time and explore Mpumalanga’s ancient cultures, the gold rush era, royal tombs, buried trade routes, and inspirational cave art. Learn about the region’s empires and royalty and the movement of the white settlers into the land. In addition, discover how Mpumalanga was rocked by a world war and observe the changes it’s had on the area as a whole.

Casting in the mountains: Freshwater rivers, and mountainous terrain make Mpumalanga a fisherman’s dream come true. Whether you’re a beginner fisher or an advanced one, Mpumalanga has the equipment, guides, and a variety of tours to accommodate your every need. A variety of fish are indigenous to the area including the tigerfish, bass, rainbow and brown trout, yellowfish carp, catfish, tilapia, and freshwater eel. But the excitement doesn’t stop there. While you enjoy the thrills of the big catch, it’s difficult not to take in the other wildlife that surrounds you, such as hippo, crocodile, and exotic birdlife.

Music in the air: Discover the enlightening dance rituals and pop culture of Mpumalanga’s unique community. With music genres ranging from acapella groups to jazz clubs and rock, it’s no wonder Africa has landed a spot as one of the world’s most renowned havens for inspirational and fascinating forms of music. Cultural village tours are also offered, where you are able to take part in community celebrations and observe dances, theatrical performances, and pop music.

Brace yourself: Canyoning is one of the most exciting and heart-pounding ways to observe the thick forests and exotic wildlife of Mpumalanga. Slide down rapids, paddle through winding streams, and sail down mini waterfalls on this exciting excursion and feel the adrenaline rush of a lifetime.

Cave diving: For the adventurist, cave diving is one of the most exciting ways to view some of the world’s most captivating and undiscovered territory. As you dive through underwater valleys and sink holes into ancient caves, you’ll observe an unforgettable underwater wonderland.

The Lion Sands Private Game Reserve ecologist’s April report is in, and it appears that April was a delightful month for Lion Sands’ guests. Since April tends to be a dryer month, many animals were seen eating small crustaceans and vertebrates in the pans and mud pools that are beginning to dry.

Visitors to the Lion Sands Game Reserve in April were rewarded with plentiful sightings of wild game, especially lion and leopard. And, as usual, the Big Five sightings were exceptional!

Birds spotted during the month of April included African fish eagles, and saddlebilled and woollynecked storks. Several migrating species were also spotted, such as the Eurasian bee-eaters and woodland kingfishers.

Reptiles spotted during the month of April included the tree agama, African rock python, Nile crocodile, and Mozambique spitting cobra. With the colder weather approaching, reptile sightings were less frequent because they’ve been seeking shelter from the chilled air.

Lion sightings were extraordinary during the month of April. Both the Southern Pride and Hilda’s Rock Pride were regularly spotted, which was a great treat for Lion Sands’ guests. There have been occasion sightings of a single female from the Hilda’s Rock Pride over the past several months. The reason for the solo female lion is because the rest of Hilda’s Rock Pride has moved south of Lion Sands to neighboring parts of Kruger National Park. The Lion Sands’ ecologist is not absolutely positive what triggered these lions to move to other parts of Kruger Park, but has a sound theory. According to the Lion Sands’ ecologist report, “Lion prides are a socially complex arrangement and the move might have to do with a change in their social structure or interactions with other prides.”

There is speculation that the solo female lion has a group of cubs sheltered in the riverine vegetation. Guests were delighted to see three of the female’s adorable cubs playing in the grasslands while she basked in the hot, African sun. Future guests to the Lion Sands Game Reserve can look forward to spotting these cubs as they grow older.

Leopard sightings during the month of April were outstanding! With up to three leopards being spotted on each African safari tour, guests saw leopards mating and hunting. Several kills included impala, duiker, scrub hare, and banded mongoose.

The chart below was taken from the Lion Sands’ ecologist’s report and “indicates the percentage of Big Five sightings in the month of April on game drives on Lion Sands Private Game Reserve.”
