With its vast plains, exotic wildlife, melting sunsets, cheerful locals, and stunning natural surroundings, it’s no wonder Africa is viewed as one of the most beautiful continents. But what many people may not realize is that Africa is also full of inspirational sounds that are just as gorgeous and unique as the visuals.
Whether you’re on an African family safari or a romantic honeymoon safari, the harmonious sounds you hear while on your trip will never be forgotten.

Whistling birds: From the comfort of your own suite to the adventures you have in the African bush, the sounds of unfamiliar birds are a constant source of background melodies. Some vocalizations you may hear during your trip include goshawks, orioles, parrots, weavers, waders, kingfishers, and many more.
Chirping crickets: Although you may never see them, the soft sounds of chirping crickets add to your nighttime experience in Africa.
African drums: Arguably the most popular instrument in all of Africa, the drum is one of the most inspirational sounds associated with this musical continent. There are various types of drums made throughout Africa, some more popular than others. The most widely used and recognized of the mix is the Djembe drum, which is celebrated for its rich and deep percussion sounds. Made from wood and covered with goatskin, the Djembe is played with bare hands and was first introduced as a dance ritual instrument.
Locals singing: One of the most enriching and beautiful sounds are the voices of the locals. In the video below, we were preparing to leave the Madikwe Safari Lodge when we were delightfully surprised by the staff choir’s lovely “send off.”
Laughter around the fire after dinner: After an exciting day with your loved ones and new-found friends, nothing is better than gathering around the outdoor fire reminiscing about the day and a delightful dinner. What’s even better is hearing the joy and laughter of everyone who discovered something new and exciting that day.
Crackling fire: When dinner is over and you’re not yet ready to retreat to your private suite, sitting next to the crackling outdoor fire is the perfect harmonious beginning to a peaceful night’s rest. You don’t even have to go to the spa to feel completely rejuvenated and ready for the next day’s adventures—the soothing sounds and warm feeling of the fire is enough to sooth your senses.
Frogging Safari
Whistling frogs:
Depending on where you are in southern Africa, the sounds of whistling frogs can faintly be heard throughout the night.
Distant lion roars: One of the most thrilling sounds to be heard on African safari tours is the distant roar of a lion. Whether tracking a lion on a walking safari or waiting patiently for one to approach on a game drive, the sheer sound of a lion is enough to send adrenaline down your spine.
Trumpeting elephants: The sights and sounds of elephants as they playful splash through the water is one of the most warming feelings to be had in the African bush. Their dominating stature coupled with their gentle behavior makes the elephant one of the most memorable creatures to observe in the wild.
