We decided to interview Dave Estment, noted wildlife photographer and videographer, on wildlife photography tips. If you missed Part I of this guest interview with the remarkable Dave Estment, click here.

For Part II of Dave’s interview, see below:

In addition to bringing a camera on safari, we also suggest that our clients bring binoculars. What binoculars would you suggest safari-goers purchase?

Yes, travelers should definitely bring binoculars. You can sit for hours watching wildlife through binoculars, and certainly use them to spot photographic opportunities, which is then the time to pull out the camera gear.

In regards to which binoculars to purchase? In my opinion, there is only one choice in terms of value for money and steady viewing, and that’s the the Canon 10 x 30 IS binoculars. These binoculars are extremely well-priced and knock the socks off the opposing brands with its fantastic image stabilization technology. Money really well spent!

You do a lot of wildlife photography that captures flying birds and high-action predators. What tips do you have for amateur photographers who want to capture the action on safari?

For inexperienced action photographers, there are three most important aspects to successful action photography: correct shutter speed, smooth panning, and focus.

No matter what anyone tells you, if you do not have the focal point of any image perfectly in focus, whether it is just the eye of the subject, or just the hairs on a macro subject, or whether it is the focal point of a wide-angle landscape, it is not a perfect shot. PERIOD! Apart from the other parameters requisite in a great image, if the focus is not exactly there, do not waste your time with it.

In a panned, slow-shutter-release shot of a leopard chasing its prey, or a panned high-speed shot of a raptor to freeze the beauty of its feathers and the finer detail, the focal point must be right. Not the tip of the raptor’s wing if you were actually wanting to focus on the eye, not the bush behind the leopard, when you were actually wanting to focus on it or the prey’s eyes, as this will be totally different from the image you were wanting to portray.

So as a rule of thumb, use the highest shutter speed available as your default setting, make sure you pan with the moving subject smoothly, squeeze the shutter release button off like a sniper firing a rifle, SMOOTHLY, and follow the subject through after releasing the shutter.

Once you begin to master this, you can start experimenting with lower shutter speeds and different techniques. Honestly, this is probably the most difficult skill to master in photography, so practice, practice, practice! It is also the single most important ingredient that will distinguish your work.

Remember, auto focus helps a lot, but it is not the Holy Grail by any stretch of the imagination. The human eye, well trained, is the answer. No question.

This is just a brief intro into the magnificent universe of wildlife photography. It is infinitely complex, and takes a lifetime to master, if ever, but I sincerely hope that this short article helps guide you on a magical safari experience.

How can you describe a rhythm that inspires and enlightens you? Africa’s radiating energy is something that needs to be experienced to truly understand its power, but I’ll do my best to set the scene.

In our last newsletter, we focused on the visual stimulations that Africa provides to visitors. In this newsletter, we will attempt to describe the riveting sounds of this enchanting continent.

Some of the most moving and powerful sounds to listen to in Africa are the sounds of joy and laughter. Even if you couldn’t see the radiant smiles of the African people, you could still feel their warm hospitality through the tone of their voice and the sound of genuine kindness. From the moment you awake to your early morning game drive, and your remarkable bush dinner to the time you fall asleep, your accommodation staff and safari guides will undoubtedly win over your heart.

Outside of your accommodations, you may decide to take a trip to a local orphanage or school where the sound of children laughing and playing sends tingles of sheer joy down your spine. There is something about the innocence that these children poses and their zest for life that is humbling and truly magnificent. And often, children will put on little musical performances for visitors where all the children sing along and dance to the tune of each other’s cluster of voices.

There are also many traditional African musical performances that shouldn’t be missed while on your trip to Africa. Some accommodations provide live entertainment with traditional dance and song each night, while others provide guests with a farewell song, which is sung by the staff as guests’ depart home or to their next destination.

One of Africa’s most celebrated traditional instruments is the drum. There are various types of drums made throughout Africa, some more popular than others. The most widely used and recognized of the mix is the Djembe drum, which is celebrated for its rich and deep percussion sounds. Made from wood and covered with goatskin, the Djembe is played with bare hands and was first introduced as a dance ritual instrument.

If you’re traveling to a city such as Johannesburg or Cape Town, you’ll find an eclectic music scene pounding through the city centers and hot spots. These areas have been influenced by urbanization and Western culture; therefore, music in the big cities has pop, rap, and other modernized tones and beats.

When you’re immersed into natural surroundings on a walking safari, game drive, mokoro safari, or on the patio of your bush camp, there is nothing more angelic than the melodies of various birds, a distant lion’s roar, or a trumpeting elephant.

And as the sun sets behind the glowing horizon, the sounds continue to fill the air with harmony. As you enjoy a traditional bush dinner on the patio of your accommodations beneath the stars, the warm crackle of the fire, the sound of kerosene lanterns burning, whistling frogs, and light African music create a remarkable acoustic ambiance that uniquely combines nature with culture.

There is almost always a pivotal point in everyone’s life that has piqued curiosity and thirst to explore a country or continent outside the realm of their home and everyday life. And often times, these moments happen while absorbing some form of medium, whether it’s a book, television or radio show, magazine, musical piece, or poem.

And travelers to Africa are no different.

There is often a point in the lives of travelers to Africa when they realize that the desire for discovery has been ignited and untamable. Whether seen through a fictional novel, memoirs of Theodore Roosevelt, the Discovery Channel, or National Geographic, visions of Africa beckon something from within.

The astounding harmony of visual elements within Africa is truly unbelievable. Imagine the spine-tingling sound of the delicate wilderness softly singing in your ears as you lay beneath a sparkle-studded, deep velvety sky. The comfort and elegance of a nature-inspired suite is out of sight yet just a few steps away. This is nature and serenity at its purest.

When the brazen sun delicately creeps above the building-less horizon, a fusion of creamy orange, ruby red, and sunflower yellow casts across Africa’s quiet landscape in an attempt to awaken and nudge the wildlife to begin their day. No artificial color, structure, or vision steps into this pristine scene.

There is no dawn break in the world as vibrant.

As you awake with the wildlife at dawn, you begin your day with visual stimulation on a traditional morning game drive into the bush, canoe safari, walking excursion, or scuba diving adventure. Depending on where you are in Africa, the landscape will be drastically different, but all share one common trait—each region’s residential creatures perfectly complement the natural hues of the earth, adding a jolt of brilliant colors to the landscape.

If you’re visiting the Moremi National Park in Botswana, you’ll witness breathtaking scenery comprised of cracked, red-mud plains and glistening lagoons hidden between the solid trunks of towering, bird-clad baobabs.

For an underwater wonderland, visit Zanzibar’s Mnemba Island to swim alongside over 400 species of fish, vibrant coral reefs, and free roaming dolphins.

And, for an adventure through the wildlife-dense African plains visit the Kalahari Desert in Namibia where you’ll observe a wide range of animals including the Big Five, small reptiles, minute insects, playful Cape fur seals, and vibrant flamingos.

At night, lions and leopards are frequently spotted on the move or hunting.

Ostrich farm: Visit Western Cape’s Little Karoo for a unique tour through one of its many ostrich farms. During these tours, you’ll observe breeding behaviors and witness how ostrich eggs and feathers are crafted into decorative assortments for the home and stylish accessories.

Port Elizabeth: Filled with an array of stunning beaches, nearby golf courses, boardwalk shopping, a casino, water sport activities, and an aquarium, Port Elizabeth creatively combines relaxation with adventure. And at night, the city comes to life with exciting ghost, graveyard, and cell tours.

Quad Biking: South Africa’s rugged, bumpy terrain has made this country synonymous with quad biker’s paradise. Whether you want to ride through the Drakensberg Mountains or the beaches, the bushveld or the Valley of The Elephants, Mpumalanga wetlands or Kruger National Park, you’re guaranteed to find adventure in the varying terrains of South Africa.

Rust en Vrede: This exceptional estate exclusively produces only red wines and is located in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Their wines include 1694 Classification, Syrah 2006 (which has already sold out), Estate 2005, Shiraz 2005, Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, and Merlot 2008. Their bold, full-bodied reds are a treat to anyone’s itinerary and this estate should not be missed. In 2008, the Rust en Vrede estate’s 1694 Classification wine and the Syrah 2006 wine both received the double golden Veritas Award for excellence.

Swim with the penguins: Not as traditional as swimming with the dolphins, swimming with the penguins offers a completely unique experience if you’re looking to get up-close-and-personal with these adorable little creatures. Boulders Beach on the Cape Peninsula is one of the only places in all of Africa where the African penguin lives and it is a highly-rewarding experience to interact with them in their natural environment.

Tour Table Mountain: Enjoy a panoramic view of Table Mountain as you journey up the rocky mountainside in a rotating cable car. Each cable car has the ability to fully rotate, giving you the opportunity to see 360 degrees around you. On your cable car trip you’ll see stunning gardens, death-defying cliffs, and playful dassies—furry brown creatures that live on the mountain whose closest relatives are the elephants. Because there are 350 routes up the mountain, having a guided tour is highly recommended, as it can be extremely difficult and sometimes dangerous to navigate the mountain on your own.

uKhahlamba-Drakensberg: As the longest, tallest, and largest mountain range in all of South Africa, uKhahlamba-Drakensberg (meaning “Dragon Mountain”) is a must-see natural phenomena. This World Heritage site has one of the largest collections of Sans rock paintings in all of Africa. On the mountain you can also see a wide variety of plant, bird, mammal, and reptile species, and you can experience exciting activities such as hang gliding, hiking, and rock climbing.

Victoria and Alford Waterfront in Cape Town: This area is one of the most culturally enriching places to see in Cape Town. With a working harbor, unique seaside culture, five-star restaurants, historical monuments, and world-famous shopping hubs, Victoria and Alford Waterfront has it all.

Walking safari: If you’re looking for an African safari tour that combines an interactive experience with a rich cultural and learning environment, then you’ll want to take part in a walking safari through Kruger National Park, South Africa. On a walking safari, you’ll learn to listen for the distinct callings of South Africa’s wildlife, search for animal markings, and track paths of residential lions and elephants with the invaluable expertise of certified local guides. These highly knowledgeable guides introduce you to the hidden elements of indigenous wildlife that ranges from larger game to intricate wildlife hidden beneath rocks and inside crevasses.

Xhosa People: With a population of around 7 million individuals, the Xhosa people primarily live in the Eastern Cape and are the ancestors of the Nguni, a group that migrated from central and northern Africa to southern Africa. Keeping their traditional culture alive, the Xhosa people provide visitors to the region with a culturally enlightening experience. Watch as they craft exceptional beadwork, perform dance rituals, and speak in the Xhosa language (comprised of clicking sounds).

honeYmoon safari: South Africa is one of the most exceptional places to enjoy a romantic honeymoon safari. With a variety of intimate and luxurious accommodations that provide honeymooners with superior service and care, and a wide spectrum of activities for honeymooners, it’s no wonder South Africa has made a name for itself as the perfect honeymoon destination.

Zulu Traditions: Zulu culture has kept the same traditions passed down from their ancestors including ceremonies, rituals, and old traditions. With the belief that birth, marriage, and death are important times to interact with the ancestors, the Zulu people will sacrifice a variety of items to the ancestors during these moments in life such as home-brewed beer or a slaughtered animal.

Enjoy a spectacular African safari vacation in one of Nomad Tanzania’s most renowned camps. Nomad Tanzania is an Ecotourism company dedicated to conserving Tanzania’s wildlife and building a sustainable local economy. One of their most famous camps is the Nduara Loliondo camp, which moves twice a year around the Loliondo community region. This community also borders the Serengeti National Park.

The camp is situated in the sprawling Piyaya plains from December to June, and from mid-June to December the camp is located in the Ololosokwan Village. Both areas offer striking landscapes and delightful game-viewing, but stand apart in other unique characteristics.

One look inside the Nduara Loliondo camp and your knees will weaken at the sight of such a magnificent treasure. The luxurious accommodations, thrilling adventures, amazing game-viewing, and mesmerizing natural surroundings of the Nduara Loliondo camp combine to create an authentic African safari trip of a lifetime.

What makes the Nduara Loliondo camp in Tanzania so legendary?

• Nduara Loliondo was designed to reflect international nomadic cultures, especially the local Maasai bomas culture. The fusion of rich culture, captivating décor, comfort, and openness to nature, makes this camp one of Tanzania’s most prized gems.

• Nduara Loliondo is comprised of six yurts, each with its own en-suite bathroom and traditional bucket shower. Large windows and doors let in generous amounts of light and air into the yurt, allowing the essence of African nature to brighten the room. There is also a traditional open wheel in the center of the roof that can be opened to allow even more light and air into the yurt.

• Nduara Loliondo’s dining yurt is the perfect place to retreat after an exhilarating day in the African sun. Enjoy delicious cuisine in a comfortable and social atmosphere, or cozy up to your loved ones with a glass of wine as the sun sets.

• Nduara Loliondo is an adventurist’s haven, offering exciting game run-ins around every corner. With the opportunity to enjoy game drives in the surrounding Serengeti National Park, Nduara Loliondo primarily focuses on night game drives and walking safaris—although they do provide day game drives as well.

• Nduara Loliondo boasts just as many relaxing activities as it does adventurous ones. Enjoy a soothing picnic as you watch the sunset behind the Serengeti horizon before embarking on a night drive to discover hidden creatures you otherwise would not see during the day.

• Nduara Loliondo is situated in an area where the Maasai culture lives, providing you with a unique insight into tribal life and the cultural history of the people.

Celebrate exciting discoveries, relaxing and beautiful accommodations, cultural diversity, and out-of-this-world game-viewing at Nomad Tanzania’s Nduara Loliondo camp. Let Hills of Africa Travel plan your next African family safari or honeymoon safari, and experience an unforgettable trip of a lifetime.
Known for its wonderful game-viewing, captivating scenery, and mesmerizing soul, Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, is arguably one of Africa’s greatest unspoiled terrain. This Park is a prime focus for conservation, making it one of the most wildlife-abundant parks in Africa. With over 100 different species of animal and 400 species of bird, Hwange National Park is a must-visit destination for those looking to enjoy an African family safari or honeymoon safari.

One of Hills of Africa Travel’s favorite lodges in Hwange is The Hide Lodge. This Lodge is one of the few accommodations directly situated in the Park. We love The Hide for its joyful staff, friendly atmosphere, prime location, and spectacular accommodations. If you’re looking to enjoy an authentic Zimbabwe safari trip, The Hide is the perfect place to stay.

Top 5 Reasons Why The Hide Is The Place To Stay In Hwange National Park:

1) The Hide has coined the phrase: “You’ll arrive as a stranger and leave as a friend.” The staff is not only a delightful breath of fresh air—they are attentive and accommodating as well!

2) The Hide provides guests with furnished tents that exude the essence of the area’s natural surroundings. Each tent provides guests with their own en-suite bathroom for convenience and privacy. The authenticity and comfort of these tents is what gives The Hide its flavorful character.

3) The Hide’s ideal location beside a large waterhole is perfect for game-viewing from your personal tent. And not just any game-viewing. Guests see rhinos, lions, and elephants right outside their tent. Visitors can get even closer to wild game in the Lodge’s concealed hides. These concealed hides offer guests the opportunity to observe game safely from an extremely close distance.

4) The Hide offers a variety of fantastic safaris to choose from including night drives, day drives, and walking safaris in the bush. All safaris are accompanied by private, professional, and knowledgeable tour guides.

5) The Hide boasts exquisite cuisine for guests in a casual and friendly environment. The dining setup is the perfect place to socialize about the day’s adventures. And who knows? You might come across some more adventures while eating, as a herd of elephants or pride of lions stops to sip from the waterhole.

You’ll be captivated by the abundance of wildlife, lush scenery, and blissful atmosphere.
When many people think of an African safari, they only envision one type—an adventure in a rugged vehicle, bouncing about the rolling terrain of Africa. This is absolutely true, but there are also several other types of safaris that are just as exhilarating, and shouldn’t be overlooked when planning your trip to Africa. Although a vehicle safari is a must while on your African safari trip, there are plenty of other types of safaris you may not be aware of, that are unique and just as exciting.

Did you ever think there could be five different types of an African safari vacation?

A game-drive safari or vehicle safari could be considered the most traditional. The thrill of the vehicle’s invigorating speed and ruggedness create a truly authentic safari. Vehicle safaris offer an exceptional view of wild game throughout the area, and allow you to sit back and enjoy the excitement of a lion attacking its prey unravel before your eyes. Most luxurious lodges and camps offer excellent vehicle safaris.

A walking safari allows you to connect with nature on a whole new level. The movement and feel of this safari is completely opposite to a vehicle safari, as you can feel the ground beneath your feet, and are on a different height level than a vehicle. A walking safari offers the same fantastic game-viewing experience and adventure as a vehicle safari, while offering a different perspective on nature. Zambia’s Luangwa National Park is famous for its exceptional walking safaris.

A canoe safari boasts a fresh perspective on animal behavior. The rivers and water holes provide a place for animals to bathe, play, and drink from. Watch a hippo charge into the water or a baby elephant play with his mother. In addition to observing animals behaving in a different environment, a canoe safari boasts a large variety of birds and water-dwelling animals, which cannot be seen on any other type of safari. The Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe is the ideal place to enjoy a canoe safari.

A balloon safari is one of the most interesting safaris there is. This one-of-a-kind safari is truly a unique adventure since riders have a bird’s-eye-view of the land, and can observe nature from a whole new perspective. Game-viewing is spectacular as you glide above the treetops, and soak in the picturesque moments. Enjoy a hot-air balloon safari at Singita Grumeti Reserve in Tanzania, and experience an out-of-this-world escapade.

A horseback safari is arguably one of the most adventurous safaris there is. Running with a herd of zebra on horseback is an experience that cannot be matched by any other. Feel the adrenaline rush through your veins as you ride along the sprawling hills and observe spectacular creatures and the Big Five at close proximity. Singita Grumeti Reserve in Tanzania now offers horseback safaris for experienced riders.

Are you ready to take a vacation full of fresh perspectives and life-altering adventures? Zambia’s Luangwa National Park is the place to go. Famous for its exceptional walking safaris, exotic wildlife, unspoiled wilderness, and infinite beauty, the Luangwa National Park is a must see destination for safari enthusiasts.

Filled with a wide spectrum of wildlife, the Luangwa National Park is the ideal haven for water dwellers, land animals, and tree habitants. The intricate streams, which weave throughout the land, stimulating heavy plant growth, and the bending trees, which canopy the streams and earth, create the perfect place for a walking safari.

Celebrating over a 100 different species of mammal, 500 species of bird, and nearly 50 species of reptile, you’re guaranteed to see something extraordinary in Luangwa National Park’s wilderness. Walking safaris bring you closer to exotic wildlife than ever before. No longer do you have a safari vehicle between you and nature. It’s the raw feeling of being among nature with no barriers, which creates a sense of fulfillment and thrill.

During your walking safari, a personal tour guide takes you through the untouched woodlands, open grasslands, and dense forests. You’ll see lions yawning as the afternoon slowly passes, crocodiles waiting patiently in the water, and elephants bathing in the stream with their young. The feeling of pure excitement washes over your body as you stand merely a few feet from these magnificent creatures.

This is not a vacation. This is a one-of-a-kind experience. A perfect memory.
